Canadian Open
Interesting tournament this week. The tournament traditionally gets a pretty decent field because the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) sponsors a bunch of stars and basically pays them to show up a week after the British. The Canadian Open used to be a really big tournament, but now it falls on a terrible spot on the calendar. Also, Canada's own Mike Weir will be truly missed this week as he deals with undisclosed personal reasons.

I think it's Jason Day's tournament to win. He's only a couple back after day 1. Perhaps Bubba Watson, who also had a nice opening round, will make a charge this week as well. After round 1, a young little known Argentinian named Emiliano Grillo is winning at 8-under. Grilllo leads a not so stellar first page of the leaderboard, but the second page has names like Day, Bubba and Furyk. This is the same Grillo, diehard golf fans may remember, who missed a two-foot putt to win the Puerto Rican Open during an opposite field event earlier this year.

A wild incident also happened today when Robert Allenby did his best Tin Cup impression and fired his caddie midround. Allenby, the same guy who got mugged in Hawaii earlier this year, carried his bag for a few holes before hiring a local looper from the gallery at the turn.

Interesting Note: It's hard to believe that Tiger Woods, who is not playing this week at Glen Abbey, is not qualified for the Bridgestone at historic Firestone in two weeks. The Big Cat may have to win at his own tourney outside in D.C. next week to play in the limited-field event in Akron......Still no word on Little Swoosh after his injury during the kickabout. Will the Rors be ready in time for the PGA at Whistling Straights to defend his title.

Looking forward to watching the Senior British Open as well this weekend. My money is on Bernard Langer or Monty, but wouldn't mind seeing Watson win. Watson is only two shots back after round one. I wonder if he wins the Senior British this week, which qualifies him to play next year's Open, if he reconsiders. I believe one of the reasons Watson said St. Andrews would be his last is because his exemptions had ended.

That's interesting. It sounds like you have to be a pretty big jerk to fire your caddy in the middle of the round.

I've found that most Australians seem to be pretty cool and laid back. I enjoy following Steve Elkington, another Aussie, on Twitter. Actually, I don't have an account but he is one of the few people who I will see what they tweeted if I have time to surf the Internet. Elkington is really funny.

But I guess you can't stereotype people like that,

RE: Canadian Open
Early Friday update .....

Jason Day has moved to 10-under this morning, as I suspected.

He is now two shots back of Chad Campbell and Brian Harmon.....Haven't heard much from Campbell since he lost the playoff at the Masters to Angel Cabrera about eight or so years ago ....

Notes .... Play is suspended at the Senior British as Montgomerie has tied for the lead at 5-under..... It's hard to believe that Langer won this event last year by 13 strokes ... ESPN is supposed to start coverage of the Senior Open at 11 a.m.....Hope they get back on the course, but they may be done for the day .... Patrick Reed is playing nicely at the Omega Masters over on the Euro Tour

By many accounts, easily one of the biggest pricks on tour was Greg Norman. I have a few stories from personal experience and others that crossed paths with him.

RE: Canadian Open
Here is a quick recap of where we stand after Friday's action.

The big news in the afternoon wave at Oakville, Ontario was a back-nince charge by the button-to-the-top lefthander, Bubba Watson. Watson wasn't doing much all day but caught fire on the back nine, shooting five under par over the last four holes. Watson stands at 9-under par for the tournament and is still 5 shots back going into the weekend.

Most of the leaders, as Watson noted during his post round interview, made the most of the better conditions on the other half of the draw.

Chad Campbell leads at 14-under
Harmon 13-under

And what about Canada's own David Hearn, trying to be the first homegrown champion in decades at Canada's national championship. At 11-under par, Hearn sits just three shots back in his quest for history. Johnson Wagner also stands at 11-under with Jason Day lurking at 10-under.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile at the Senior British, the second round was suspended due to heavy rains with only a handful of players finishing.
Eight players are tied for the lead as the hunt for the lone major on the Champion Tour not played in the United States.
The leaders at 5-under include, Montgomerie, Bart Bryant, Michael Allen, Marco Dawson, Janzen, Miguel "The Mechanic" Jimenez, and Jeff Sluman.

Fred Couples, perhaps my all-time favorite golfer, didn't play a hole on Friday and still stands at 2-under. With perhaps 36 holes to play on Saturday, it will be interesting to see if Boom Boom's back holds up on the weekend. If it does, he should be a factor.

Tom Watson is at 1-under.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the Omega European Masters, Danny Willett, fresh off his fine performance at the Open Championship at St. Andrews last week, leads by one shot at 13-under par over a pair of Korean born players, including the 2009 Tiger Slayer Y.E. Yang.

If you happen to get up early Saturday, I would highly recommend you catch the action from Switezerland at the Omega European Masters. The mountain views, even from your TV set, are to say the very least breath taking.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The LPGA tour is in Grand Rapids, Michigan this week, and it appears that most of the better known players like Paula "The Pink Panther" Creamer are taking the week off.

RE: Canadian Open
Good morning golf fans!

Here's an early morning Saturday update from the Golf World.

Well, it looks like Fred Couples' back might be feeling just fine. With most of the second round complete Freddie is just two shots out of the lead at the Senior British Open. Couples is at 6-under, while fellow American Marco Dawson leads a jammed packed leaderboard at 8-under. German's Bernhard Langer, the defending champ, is just one back.

Here's how it stands.

Dawson 8-under
Langer 7-under
Couples 6-under
Fowler (not Ricky) 6-under
Monty 6-under
Sluman 6-under
Bryant 6-under
Sluman 5-under
Calcavechia 5-under
Janzen 5-under

It should be lots of fun watching this when ESPN picks up coverage later this morning. We are all in for a special treat as Peter Allis will be leading the commentary.

---------------------------------------------------------

At the Omega Euro Masters young Matthew Fitzpatrick leads midway through the third round. I believe this is the same Fitzpatrick who played at Northwestern.

Here's a look at the leaderboard in Switerland

Fitzpatrick -11
Jacquelin -10
Baek -10
Richard Green -9
Yang -9
Lipsky -8

David Lipsky is an American, and I always try to pull for the few Americans when I watch golf across the pond.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a link for some more news from the Allenby story. His caddie calls him a bully.

http://www.golfchannel.com/news/golf-cen...ound-blow/

------------------------------------------------

For fans of the Ladies Tour, there is a 3-way tie at the Meijer LPGA Classic in Grand Rapids Michigan.

American's Allison Lee, Lizette Salas and Lexi Thompson share the top spot at 9-under

Nice day by Campbell yesterday. He's playing well this week. I'm rooting for Day, but it'll be tough.

RE: Canadian Open
What a story we have developing in the Great White North.

Canada's own David Hearn is leading the RBC Canadian Open. Hearn, trying to become the first Canadian to win the Canadian Open since 1957, has a two-shot lead, going into Sunday's final round.

If Hearn is to make history, he will have to fight off two of the game's show ponies (as Gary McCord refers to them) in Jason Day and Bubba Watson.

Tomorrow could be a day to remember at the famed Abbey. Or it could be Molsen's full of tears like when Mike Wier seemingly had the torunament in hand in the early 2000s, only to be caught and run over by the robotic Vijay Sighn

Here's a quick look at the board.

Hearn -15
Watson -13
Day -13
Michael Putnam -12
Campbell -11
Furyk -11
Grillo -11
Villegas -11
Wagner -11

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Senior Open Update

The old guys are about half way through the third round when play was called for darkness at Sunningdale.

Hard hitting jorneyman Marco Dawson and Colin Montgomerie share the lead at 10-under, both through nine holes.

Freddie Couples and little known Irishman Phillip Walton are both tied for third at 8-under.

And it would be unwise to count out either Bernard Langer or Jimenez, who both trail by three at 7 under.

--------------------------------------------------

At the LPGA event in Michigan, Salas has taken a commanding four shot lead going into the final day. At 16 under par, she leads both Kris Tamulis and Lexi Thompson who are at 12-under.

RE: Canadian Open
Good morning golf fans!

Congratulations go out to Englishman Danny Willett for winning the Omega European Masters by one stroke over youngster Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Me thinks Willett has all the game to become a household name here in the states. Wouldn't be surprised to see him win a major in the next few years.

Also, think bright things are in store for young Fitzpatrick.

-----------------------------------------------------

At the opening stages of the fourth round of the Senior Open, Motgomerie and Marco Dawson are tied for the lead at -12 under par. The pair are one stroke ahead of defending champ Langer.

Freddie Couples needs to start making some birdies. Freddie's 8-under par and will need to have a great back nine in order to capture his second Senior Open.

----------------------------------------------------------

As for the PGA Tour, I think it will be Jason's Day. The Aussie has too much talent, and that talent is eventually going to turn in to a truck load of wins, me thinks. Should be interesting ....................

And Marco Dawson holes a 30-footer on the 72nd hole of the tournament to claim the 2015 Senior Open Championship. Hall of Famers Langer and Montogomerie played well, but the week belonged to Dawson, who is now exempt for the 2016 Open Championship at Royal Troon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

In Canada, Hearn holds a three shot lead in his quest for history. Hearn has had a couple errant tee shots, but so far they haven't hurt him at all.

He stands at -17 under.

RE: Canadian Open
In the end, the DAY belonged to JASON as he is the 2015 RBC Canadian Open champion.

Day made a great putt for birdie on 18 that looked at first like it was going the wrong way, but it found its course and a few feet away it was clear the ball was dead center. This is Day's fourth PGA Tour win, and there should be much more to come. If you are looking to make a wager on who is going to win the PGA Championship, it would wise to think about putting a schilling or two on the strong, and healthy now, Jason Day.

As well, The play of David Hearn won't be forgotten any time soon up in those parts, I am sure. Although the young Canadian couldn't quite hold on, he gave quite an effort as well. Hearn and the rest of his fellow Maple Leaves surely have nothing to be ashamed of.

Thumbs up to Bubba Watson as well. The sometimes petulant enigma from Baghdad was all class this week, and nearly had a come back for the record books. Needing eagle for a playoff on 18, Watson's second shot was right on line and looked great the whole way in the air. Alas, Watson's sneaky eagle attempt (by putting with a 7-wood from off the green) was just off line.
