Their fans are in Chicago watching on TV instead of coming to the games. Thus, they bring the Chicago TV market.

Their home schedule is horrible. Nobody is driving from Chicago for that.

1. Not suprised SJSU & UNLV are on the list. They've struggled with attendance for a long time, basically forever.

2. Is NIU's attendance really that bad? Kind of shocked about that, especially given the success they've had. However, is this generally how it is? Has it always been that bad?

They will try to tell you its not always that bad, but it is. I looked it up and debated with them on the realignment board (they think they have a shot at the Big 12 01-wingedeagle)

Yes, it might not always be THAT bad, but its still top 15 worst most seasons.

Drive from Chicago? Yeah right, they aren't even walking across the street for the games. We all know how numbers are inflated, that is tickets sold guys.

So how many do you think they actually had lol.

NIU does NOT bring the Chicago market. That's just ridiculous.

For example the ODU game last year we played at home at noon with most students gone we still had 7-8k legit butts in the seats.

Then you look at an FIU game and there are maybe 200 people in the stands.....

200 people, and 50% was FAU? Less than an hour away, right? WKU brings more fan to FIU stadium than any year FAU plays in Miami (including your game against UM).
I had wayyyyy more then 200.
There just wasn't any FIU fans there to witness it.

If those attendance numbers are correct, I don't see how any of the MAC schools can keep their football programs going for much longer. Those are really, really poor attendance figures. Programs like that are going to be shutting down soon. It's sad. Akron just built a new stadium about 5 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if the same fate faces NMSU, Idaho, ULM, UNLV etc.

Their home schedule is horrible. Nobody is driving from Chicago for that.

If they represent the Chicago market as much as I keep hearing they do, then they should get 20,000 people at the stadium just by accident. You can't tout yourself as a P5-quality program, then complain about schedule and weather keeping your numbers down. A good program is going to be the attraction. If you aren't big enough to draw the crowd on your own, chances are you're not as big as you think you are.

A consistent winner in Chicagoland with an Orange Bowl trip in their recent past should do a lot better at the gate than they do. And it sounds like a systemic issue with their high-profile sports; their men's basketball team consistently averages about 1,000 per.

But I'm sure they've heard all that before and aren't blind to it.

I guess if you had a winning record and you're on this list you have BIG problems.

I've can't believe it is possible to have that much success and that bad of an average attendance. Has NIU fired everyone in their promotions department yet?

Bowling Green's numbers don't make sense either.

So what dude? Picking specific years that make your program's attendance look good may be a cool marketing gimmick. I could pick 2010, you averaged 14025 playing only 4 home games while we averaged 16545 playing 5 home games. And your best attended game was against FIU that year with 17k and "50%" of that was FIU. I know that to be true because FIU athletics bought a ton of tickets and bused students up to Ft. Lauderdale for the game. And we coog'ed it.

So chill dude, both our attendance sucks and we need to fix it. Stop pretending like FAU doesn't have work to do on that front.

A lot of it probably has to do with ESPN and Tuesday night MAC action in Nov. when it is 20 degrees outside...Starting in NOV. usually 4 MAC teams are in action on a Tuesday night at 9 on ESPNU and ESPN2....Selling your self out to ESPN 8 can do that to a program as far as attendance goes...Thursday night is not ideal but sure as hell better then Tuesday night in the rust belt in northern Ohio in 20 degree weather...CUSA has a major advantage over the MAC in this regard....MAC I think is on its way out, wouldn't be surprised in 5 years if MAC was no more....Yet we have Northern Illinois fan over here bragging about MAC and stability...Stability will get you in FCS!

You didn't even fill and end zone at
Lockhart with your bus trip.
The fact we have any years where the attendance is higher is pathetic on your part.
You have about 10k more students!!!!

You may be right. Akron is struggling financially, and there is no telling how many others in that conference are too. Lets face it, the economy hasn't been good to the Rust Belt. With attendance numbers like these I wonder how long some of these university presidents will continue to subsidize a product their students and alumni don't care to support. Add in "Cost of Attendance" and it only adds more pressure.

NIU needs to expand their stadium and sign some H&H with some more attractive regional schools

Good catch. Initially I was going to post the top 10 until I realized there were 15 schools in the 15k range and below. As most know, the NCAA used to say you had to average at least 15k per year to stay FBS.

Their fans are in Chicago watching on TV instead of coming to the games. Thus, they bring the Chicago TV market.

Their home schedule is horrible. Nobody is driving from Chicago for that.

I was being completely sarcastic by the way. I can see where it may have not come across.

The sad thing is, there's plenty on the realignment board who aren't being sarcastic in the least. To varying degrees, they see NIU as a legitimate Big 12 hopeful, or at the very least an AAC possibility. And they tout the Chicago market as their golden goose. But they need much better buy-in from the community and the region than they're getting. If you brag about your market and your win total, your headcount should reflect that. Looking up to Georgia State and Eastern Michigan isn't going to make the Big 12 or AAC swoon.

I guess if you had a winning record and you're on this list you have BIG problems.

Thanks for the research on that Panama. Very interesting look at things from that perspective.
