RE: Keatts Gets Contract Extention...
The way college athletics are going, I suspect that UNCW is more all-in with Keatts than Bass is. That is to say, after getting left behind in the last round of realignment - where we saw the strongest CAA teams move up to more lucrative conference situations while we were floundering in the Depaulo/Merthens/Benny Moss/Peterson era - I don't think the program could survive (in its current form) through another era like that . We would fall further behind in another negative self-reinforcing feedback loop of further consolidation of money and power in college sports.

The "haves" will become stronger and the "want to haves" will get weaker. May as well make a run for glory before the next round of consolidation of power.

Keatts and Adel are Bass hires...he is all in, and is staking his AD creds on them. I'm all in with Keatts. He is not just a good coach, but he is creating a sustainable style of play that is a proven winner. We finally have an identity very much like Brownell had, based on defense. It's also a style that has many coaches able to step in should Keatts leave. Not to mention, his recruiting connections are unmatched in the history of UNCW. If this is a bet, it's one with the odds in our favor.

Yep. We just won 18 games with a team that was getting outplayed in practice all year by 4 of our newcomers. And at least two or three of his other newcomers are some of the most talented we've seen arrive in years.

Meanwhile, Buzz's first year here began with a 13-win season, but then we watched as his talented top assistant (Matt McMahon) left for Murray State. Not to mention, Coach Keatts won't have any kind of nightmarish APR issues from a prior regime to worry about.

Two very different situations and not worth comparing at all.

That APR nightmare was not the fault of any coaches. That blame should be placed solely on administration.

it's obviously not apples to apples, but i really can't believe most of you are on board after year 1! My parents taught me as a child to learn from your mistakes. I digress( I sincerely hope it works out and i think it will)

Sorry...when I said "prior regime" I intended to include Mehrtens and of course DePaolo. But Moss deserves a small share as well. He went after several "high risk" types early in his tenure and it didn't pay off.

Because it won't be a mistake. And not to mention tacking on 1 year to the back end of the deal isn't exactly an earth-shaking type of decision.

Somewhere seemingly overnight we went from worrying about Keatts leaving after 2-3 years due to success to worrying about handing him 1 extra year on his deal. We shouldn't be worrying about either of those things right now.

If I remember right, in Moss' second year, the team hand the highest GPA ever. The grades didn't fall until Moss was let go in the middle of the season. I don't think we would have had an APR problem if they had just waited until the season was over.

You cannot say that with 100% certainty, there is no guarantees.

The only thing that is ever 100 % certain are death and taxes. There's such a thing as a calculated risk. And in this case, we're not really risking anything. The gains likely include a larger buyout for any teams that come along looking to pluck him as their next HC.

Nothing we've seen so far suggests Coach Keatts is taking this program anywhere but forward. We just had a winning season in his first season under him after a 7 year drought in that category. The extension to Buzz came without a winning season, which is really the biggest difference. I'll say it again, with confidence. This is not a mistake. I get the snakebitten "it didn't work last time!" thinking, I really do. But there's really no legitimate reason I can see for this move to be criticized.

RE: Keatts Gets Contract Extention...
We all know that I'm a "hoops guy" like many of you. I'm 100% behind this guy! Are you kidding me? Yes, there's no guarantees BUT in this case...it's a guarantee, trust me. There's a reason that people bet on teams that will win a championship before a year is played. It's players. And in this case, it's players and a system that works. I've never been a big fan of selling out the whole court...not my personal style, but it works if you have the right players. UNCW has never had a coach like this but it was the right time. They play this style and I'm good with it. VCU and Louisville did quite well.

I'll just add this. If you have good ball players, it doesn't matter what the system is really. They will be able to make BB plays even if the pace is slower. And, you are always aware of the team that wants to get that spert going. You want to be able to have guys play instinctive ball...that's what we all grew up playing. Can you gain an advantage and get easy shots? With the added shooters and athleticism to this system plus undoubtedly more court saavy with some, there's no reason to doubt the future with Keatts. You also have to consider that the new shot clock will only add to Keatts system because there's not going to be enough time to milk it. If it's not right, he will fix it or get guys in that can. Plus guys are getting it done in the classroom and seeking him out as well. Heck, we have walkons that are good. He's the freaking man in my book!
