OT: El Paso artist, 'Archie' cartoonist Tom Moore dies
Famed "Archie" cartoonist and El Pasoan Tom Moore died Monday morning. He was 86. Here is Archie and his friends on the UTEP campus. Of course Betty loves UTEP! Rest in peace Mr Moore.

Quote:Moore, an Austin High School (in El Paso) graduate, got his start as a cartoonist while serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He had drawn a cartoon of his captain for fun, then was called into his office. He expected to get in trouble, but was instead reassigned to be a staff cartoonist.

He created the popular "Chick Call" strip, which ran in military service publications.

"I thought, 'I can really do this for a living,'" he told the El Paso Times in 1996.

After leaving the Navy, Moore attended Cartoonist and Illustrator School in New York with the help of his GI Bill, studying under "Tarzan" comic strip illustrator Burne Hogarth.

A year later, Moore signed up with Archie Comics.

Bob Montana created Archie in 1941, and Moore took up the ink to bring "America's Typical Teenager" to life in 1953.

"I did one comic book a month," Moore said in 1996. "I did everything. We always worked six months ahead. I'd be doing Christmas issues in June and beach stories with a foot of snow outside my window."
