RE: Shark attack at surfing contest in South Africa
Hard to hate something that has no reaction to being hated.
Kind of like hating mountain lions. Some really challenged city slicker feller stuck a bunch of sheep right outside in one of the wildest sections of mountainous land around here....with no guard dog, no nothing.
Wonder of all Wonders! The sheep farmer got really upset when a mountain lion just showed up 'out of no where' and ate a couple of the wooly things.
So a hunting party of many manly men was formed. After about half a day, they found the mountain lion sleeping it off, so they shot him and took pics of themselves all gathered around the carcass.
He was a big on'.

Darwin at work. Somewhere on youtube there is a video of a guy hand-feeding a 12 foot hammerhead down in Florida. I thought the shark should have taken the hand too, as an appetizer.

At the very least not at the coast of South Africa. One of the Earth's shark aquariums. You would think they might have a helicopter flying overhead, or a couple tethered balloons with a couple of remote cameras scanning the area. Or since sharks can smell blood in the water from miles away, hire a boat to throw out chum miles away from the surf area. Rocket science.

I used to love the water at Destin until I encountered a 9 foot hammerhead on the sandbar. He swam around us and quickly went on his way. He moved so fast that if he wanted to get us, we had no chance.
I'll go about mid-thigh level and float for awhile, but I don't like getting in the ocean anymore.

I'm a beach guy, I could happily live on the beach forever in a nice cottage. Jamaica, St. Maarten, wherever, put me there with a cool drink and a good book and I'm good forever. But swimming in the ocean? Not me. It's just a giant toilet for billions of sea creatures.
