He must really be dedicated to UAB to give up 2 years of eligibility.

I believe the rule is if you're attending college you have 5 years of college to play 4 years of a sport. If he attends classes at UAB this Fall he will lose a year of eligibility. Assuming UAB starts in '17 instead of '16 and he's still taking classes, he'll lose another year too. The only way he doesn't lose a year is to not attend college that year, anywhere (or maybe its just NCAA member institutions).

I think this kid could be out of football for 3 consecutive years? I believe he redshirted at Memphis in 2014, can't play at UAB in '15, and maybe again in '16. It's tough to keep those skills sharp like that.

UAB should be doing that, as much as possible, they have to sit out an year, and UAB isn't playing anyways. Doesn't hurt UAB in any way to sit the kid.

That is likely his plan. I have seen numerous student-athletes do just enough to stay on the team (practice, workouts, etc) to keep their free ride, remain injury-free, and get their degree. You would think that they would want to play, but that is not always the goal.

Good move to UAB from an academic perspective, but I agree with you that the move seems a little strange at this juncture from a football perspective. I'm assuming, if UAB were to start in 2017, that there would be no formal practices until next spring/summer at the very earliest?

I missed the part where he was offered and received a scholarship? If this is the case, this is great news for UAB but if it isn't, it's no news.

Not true. At the D1 level, once your clock starts, it does not stop.

Do most C-USA fans believe that UAB will start playing in 2017?

Sorry, that was not my intention at all. I am genuinely curious if he's been offered a scholarship?

Technically you can have six years if they have a medical redshirt as well. But yes, in all likelihood this guy just burned through two seasons of football.

This could mean they're going to start playing in 2016. This would make a lot more sense if that was the plan.
