If he keeps out of trouble he will find a nice home for 2016.

I know this is a terrible way to look at this situation, but he is going to end up (potentially) better off for having screwed up and broken the law. Just doesn't seem right. The only one really getting punished in all of this is JMU:

- Next year, a new FBS school will have Moreland on their team (rewarded)
- Next year, Moreland will have the chance to play up a division (rewarded)
- During that same time period, JMU will have lost one of it's top players (punished)

Well, none of that is guaranteed except the fact he's now got a record.

Let's not get carried away here.

I wish the guy well, just stop doing stupid stuff and get your act together.

Eh, I'm more of the "lets wait and see" mentality on this. He could do this, he could do that.
If he goes to say, Akron, is that really an upgrade? If he never sees nearly as much playing time and is buried in the depth chart, is that an upgrade? What if he doesn't have a scholarship and is only a walk on? I suppose he wouldn't take that offer.
He's currently at a juco and we know that certainly isn't an upgrade.

I agree with your concerns Dolley, but I feel you're missing a few crucial points:

- Next year, a new FBS school will have Moreland on their team (rewarded)
- Next year, Moreland will have the chance to play up a division (rewarded)
- During that same time period, JMU will have lost one of it's top players (punished)
- Next year, a new FBS school will have a player with an established criminal history, however minor it is, that will necessitate staff energy and focus to prevent future digressions and distractions (punished)
- Next year Moreland will have this baggage he has to deal with and how he succumbs to or overcomes its affects is a risk. He's not guaranteed to learn from this and there's a chance he may influence other players negatively. (punished)
- For the next 3 years JMU will have one less distraction and potential cancer, however minor it is, from sucking staff energy and focus on non-football related drama. (rewarded)
- Coach Withers has demonstrated his commitment to a JMU program with strong core values, and sent a powerful message to players about accountability and consequences that will deter many future knuckle-head decisions. (rewarded)

I hope he gets his life together and does well at his new school.

I do believe that the Coaching Staff did the right thing in this whole situation,
as unfortunate as it was.

At least Hot Rod's career record for blocked kicks is safe for now.

Plus he has the added benefit of being able to tinker with criminal records should there be any old dirt on him. 05-hide

I told him I wanted to see him break it.

And it's a petty Larceny conviction , about the same mistake Cam Newton made in college. Better decisions going forward will help him land another legit scholarship.

Somehow I had forgotten about all the blocked kicks. Now I fell even worse - the dude was a kick-blocking machine.

I think it's somewhat impressive that Withers appears to be trying to take a long-range view of things. I think insecure coaches (see JMUMBB) tend to make short-range decisions to try and get a few extra wins now, possibly at the expense of the long-range health or reputation of the program.
