Why Does BG Make Such A Big Deal About Urban Meyer?
The guy bolted after two years, never won a MAC title or even a division title and finished 3rd in the East both seasons.

At least Nick Saban won a MAC title before he left.

2001 BG was MAC East finished 8-3, 3rd in the East.
2002 BG was MAC West finished 9-3, 3rd in the West.

Defeated Mizzou twice, Kansas and Northwestern.

Context? I've never really heard anyone make a big deal about him except expressing anger at the way he left. Did something spur this question?

Obviously most of the national reputation that both Saban and Meyer enjoy today is based on what they accomplished AFTER they left the MAC.

At the time I thought that both left the MAC a little too soon before building a solid strong resume---Saban after only one (albeit successful) year and Meyer without a MACC for what I thought was only a minor step up at the time-----but they both proved me wrong because both respective paths out of the MAC led them to the top of their profession-----which I suspect is main reason we are even talking about them here.

My point was, that for a guy who was there only two years, many BG fans, including ones I know, still talk about him like he was there 20 years. Also, every football season Meyer's name come up in Blade stories about Bowling Green on a regular basis.

I guess it's because Meyer truly cared about his time at BG and still comes back to the community where Saban sees Toledo as a transportation hub to recruit Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. The people in Utah feel the same way about Meyer, even though he wasn't there long. Florida is mad because they haven't had the success they had under him, nor they like the way he went about leaving. Both these coaches are elite even in the MAC, Meyer turned around a pretty terrible BG team his first year. Meyer values his home in Ashtabula going back yearly for a football camp. He still reaches out to people in Utah. Why not hold him or in our situation Saban's time in Toledo highly, for the short time they were at these position the programs truly benefited.

RE: Why Does BG Make Such A Big Deal About Urban Meyer?
Great post Utrocks.

Urban went on a tour of BG's facilities last week and spoke ravely on what they have done since he left. He said those facilities have to be the best in the MAC.... I laughed. Still, he is accepted down there and has fond memories of building up their tradition, and making a career for himself.

BG fans are mostly Ohio State fans first anyways so they like that they have a "personal" connection with Meyer from 01-02. Brandon won the West the following year in 03 with Meyer's players.

BG's FB record vs the Rockets-Post Pinkel to the present(2001 thru 2014) is 5-9, including 5 straight Toledo victories.
