Does not bode well for those who need to negotiate soon. The AAC has a look in period in 2 years, doubt things get reworked big time then. Big is negotiating right now, it can't help their cause either. ESPN may put a bit of pressure on Tex to change longhorn network into B12 network, which has much better chance of being profitable. The change in Cable tv is just starting, not finishing. ESPN will lose more homes, and leverage.

Could signal that this will be the last round of huge TV contracts.

Thanks for your concern. 07-coffee3

I do agree the television world is rapidly changing, and I am one of those people out from under ESPN's monthly take on a cable tv bill. I like what C-USA is doing with ASN, and I expect those regional platforms are where we are all headed.

Well I am pretty sure ESPN wasn't negotiating with CUSA anyways so no biggie although with no competition from other networks, FOX can offer whatever to CUSA.

Why would this stop ESPN from negotiating with CUSA? If for no other reason than to drive the price up for its competition.

I actually think this news is good for the CUSA renegotiation. CUSA abandoned ESPN previously and has been working with others for a while. Time to lock in the best slots and exposure ahead of a free for all.

Why would anyone "desire" to have games on ESPN. Unless you're old and out of touch or just a moron you should know that game can be found on a host of channels. General open statement not directed at you.

Well if ESPNs best offer of time slots is an Wednesday 8pm kickoff in mid November or something similar on ESPN3, no thank you.

I only want CUSA games to be on the network that will: 1. Pay us the most money AND 2. Give us the most mainstream weekend air time!

Yep. Whether it be ASN, FOX regional, NBCSN, or ESPN's junior networks.

With ESPN having 3 networks and an online streaming service, plus Fox has put sports on 4 channels and NBC 3 of 4. Everything will be fine.

I don't like ESPN, so as far as I'm concerned... let conferences that signed with them worry about their deals when it's time to resign. I would think the AAC, MWC, MAC, and Sun Belt would be more worried about ESPN's struggles.

As for C-USA, I don't think we were negotiating with them anyway.. I could be wrong, but I'd think that whole lawsuit over the conference championship game probably burned some bridges. I'd like to believe we start by entertaining resigning offers from Fox Sports. Of course I'd like to see our revenue increase, but in a time when cable subscriptions are plummeting, any increase in TV revenue would be good. I'm cool if we end up with something similar to what we have now. I like watching games on Fox Sports Southwest, the occasional Fox Sports 1, and the ASN games. Although, I would like to see our weekly C-USA Showcase program aired on Fox Sports 1. It would be nice if we could get that out of our next deal.

FS1's pregame shows and in game announcing have had the most knowledgeable and game-focused commentary (ie not talking about the SEC game of the week the entire time) in my time as an MT fan. I've loved the deal with ASN as well to pick up most every other game on our schedule. I think we're in great shape as a conference.

.ESPN won't let the big conferences leave.... That leaves the little ones at-risk (American, etc.) and other sports. CUSA is fine in my opinion, with it's current partners.

ESPN is not struggling. They had over $11 billion in revenue last year and generated $4.5 billion in cash flow for Disney in 2014. They are a cash cow for Disney. Disney does not want to see a reduction in their profit margins and ESPN spent a lot to lock up the rights to the college football playoffs, NBA basketball and Monday Night Football.

The other G5 conferences are not affected by any ESPN cuts. The MAC has a contract through 2027 and the ACC and MWC have agreements through 2020. The Sun Belt is also tied to ESPN through 2020 and gets almost nothing in revenue, so there is no real savings in expenses for ESPN when it comes to the SBC.

We will see if ESPN is willing to spend a lot of money when the Big Ten deal comes up. That should be an interesting battle with Fox. Fox is also reducing expenses. In the meantime, CUSA and Fox look like they need each other and hopefully CUSA gets a good offer from Fox.

Playing TV games on the weekend does not help with promotion. It is great for the fans you already have but with other games on TV at the same time, you don't draw people who just want to see some football. For any G5 league you either play during the week to draw numbers or you play on the weekend to please your fans. Weeknight games are great all around as long as your team isn't the home team. Gives you the biggest exposure for a game you likely couldn't attend in person and frees up a weekend.

I remember a season when CUSA had ESPN as their tier 1 when we had one of six home games on Saturday. Even had a Sunday game that year. It was terrible for anyone that wasn't within a reasonable driving distance.

That's a bit of a case by case basis Crump. Really depends on your weekend time slot and direct competition. Let's not pretend like there aren't dud games in the P5. A noon kickoff for an average B1G game is a perfect sedative, and usually an instant engage of channel surfing mode. Even the SEC has dud games only the locals care about. Or are you just burning to watch Kentucky play Vandy?

I'd contend that matchups of top G5 teams, either in conference, or cross conference, or against most P5 teams, have just about as much casual fan interest as the P5 filler games do. A good game there can generate a lot of national interest, and help create a brand.

That's where I usually see some of the most interesting football of the season.
