Mini-Dome
Other than a practice facility, what will the 12,000 seat arena portion of the Dome be used for going forward?

There's a ton of classrooms and offices in the facility. The entire athletic department is housed in the Dome.

Well not the entire department. The women's basketball and volleyball are in Brooks.

Plus in the dome, they also have the Olympic Training facilities for those various teams. Graduation is held there and some of the concerts and activities hosted for the students are there. Pretty sure the space isn't completely going to waste and they will find many more uses for it, especially now that they don't have to reconfigure for basketball all the time.

Something to be said for the kids practicing in the air conditioning in August and September.

Wish it could be turned into a money making operation, scheduled around football practice -- the 12,000 seat arena, that is.

They tried it for 40 years. It's just a dreadfully bad facility.

Track, Track Meets, Special Olympics, tennis, basketball practice facility, basketball camps, baseball, soccer, dance classes, weight rooms, softball, year round football, locker rooms, rifle range, Boys and Girls Club Olympics, etc.

Jonson City has an agreement with the university to use the Dome for special events.

As long as it's not used for actual games, I'm good.

Can't use it for football games due to the reconfiguration after football. Took away some bathroom facilities and now insufficient fire exits. No worries there.

Torbush wanted to have the first spring game in there due snow/cold. They wouldn't allow it for the same reasons.

Fire marshall must hate that place, must have recurring nightmares about it.

Fire exits have been insufficient for 12,000 seats for several years. Basketball only had 6,000 approved by fire marshall.

Never understood why fire exits issue was not fixed. Bet "This Old House" crew could have that solved in a week.

I don't understand why people want the Dome fixed at all. It will never work for athletic games. It was an albatross on the 70s and remains an icon of poor judgement.

The leadership thought it would be a groovy multipurpose facility. It's not. Phil Collins came and had to stop his concert half way through because of the acoustics.

No leader with any savvy in athletics will consider the Dome beyond training.

The Dome mentality is a perfect example of the 1982, small-minded, small-town thinking that has mired ETSU in irrelevancy for decades. It is on par with the laughable comments on here about Pitts and Mister.

Can't argue with that. It is what it is. However, back in 1978 when it opened, it did get attention, was somewhat of a unique college venue -- and the early football games there were well attended. It really was not that bad on a cold, rainy November day. Blame it on "global warming" -- those cold, rainy/snowy days of old not as numerous. But, now, put in some fire exits and, at least, have ONE graduation ceremony at a time in the place.

And if the budget had not been cut late in the process then the grandstands would have been made ideal for viewing. They cut the budget, shortened the entire building and therefore pulled the stands up out of position ruining the side line viewing. Now the idea of playing indoors in September and October during beautiful weather was a major detraction for the Dome. As it is now it is a wonderful practice facility for many of our sports and has to be one of the best FCS indoor football practice facilities anywhere.

Oh dear - NO! While that sounds nice, do you realize how horribly long and drawn out that would be?

I sat through this year's afternoon ceremony for 5 of our international students and my attention span was done before we got halfway through.

RE: Mini-Dome
Its not a question of just putting in fire exit doors. There are only two main exits on each side of the the main arena and two very small exits on each end of each side of the arena.

Construction of two more main exits on each side would tear up class rooms and offices on both sides of arena. Dressing rooms and bathrooms would have to be built and all teams would lose valuable practice facilities. Why would anyone spend a ton of money on the dome when a new football stadium is being built and FH will be getting renovations. It makes no sense to waste money to try to make the dome a true basketball arena/football stadium. It never was and never will be.

It is a fine all sports practice facility, is home to indoor track and will be used for special events.

Lets just forget about the Dome and get on with projects that move ETSU to a higher competitive level.

RE: Mini-Dome
I just personally would love to see a Spring game next year in the Dome. Perhaps the new stadium could be under construction, they could do an on-campus event ending with the Spring game in the Dome. If they marketed it as a transition from the old to the new I think it could be a nice event. But if the fire marshall won't allow it then i guess it doesn't matter.
