Delany voted Most Influential Person in College Sports by CBSSports
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...more-power
I know this must be painful, especially for you Terry and all your Big Ten/Delany hate. Your boy Swarbrick, he just likes to talk a lot.
Quote:It's the “what's next” that is so intriguing about Delany, who was voted the Most Influential Person in College Sports by a 12-person CBSSports.com panel of folks who work in college sports. Delany's influence is only going to increase in the near future.
There is new life in the Big Ten after Ohio State's football national championship, Michigan's hiring of Jim Harbaugh and the conference's nation-high five men's basketball Final Four trips in the past four years.
There are major Big Ten TV negotiations coming that everyone in the college sports industry will be watching -- talks that Delany says could begin this fall or winter depending on who triggers the start.
He definitely deserves the award, haters be damned. He doesn't just lead The Big Ten, he leads everyone. Other Commissioners appreciate being able to follow in his wake, taking advantage of the smooth water.
Quote:This is quintessential Jim Delany. He embraces the academic/athletics dialogue -- “Where I grew up with the value of open discussion, it's not terribly personal to me if I'm criticized” -- even as he prepares to make the Big Ten a whole lot richer with its next TV deal.
I certainly have much respect for his strength and capability to move forward with his vision. Him and I have a lot in common in that regard.
Quote:The Big Ten's 10-year, $1 billion deal with ESPN/ABC football and basketball and its six-year, $72 million deal with CBS for basketball both expire after the 2016-17 academic year. The Big Ten is the last major property in pro or college sports that will be on the market during this decade.
People consumed with hatred for The Big Ten cant stand the facts. Who knows, maybe CBS will even try to get some of that Meyer vs Harbaugh action by getting a hold on some of those Big Ten Tier 1 rights.

He got dragged into the playoffs kicking and screaming.

It doesn't affect me at all. The Big Ten is irrelevant to me. No such teams on the Irish schedule.
This makes two "call out" threads where you mention me specifically.
Are you off your meds? What is with this obsession of yours lately?

Oh, he's the most influential, but he's been dragged instead of leading a lot of the time. He and Slive negotiated how the playoff would work out, but only after he lost the vote and realized it would happen.

Oh, getting so personal. Why am I doing it? Because I can. I wonder if I will catch you editing in anymore "grammar fixes" with this?
I called you out in this one only because of the other thread, stop being overly dramatic about it. I mean come on, everyone has seen you countless times pining on about how much you hate Delany.
You are the obvious call out considering the other thread and your intense hatred of The Big Ten, Delany and Michigan.

I think it'd be extremely hard for CBS to get in on the Big Ten. I suppose it's possible, but I'd say it's extremely unlikely. I mean they have the SEC until 2024 I think it is. So that would be a good 7 years where they would have to co-exist on CBS. Would be very difficult I think.

That's better but I think you can do better with your fiction.
Quote:“I have never viewed myself as a great executive or a great administrator, but I have a great interest in projects, identifying problems, working with people, making adjustments and I try to see it in the context of the DNA of the Big Ten,” he explained. “People don't want to be pushed too fast, but they do want to see what's on the horizon and around the corner.”
I can't wait for your take on this then.

Absolutely, I am still of the mindset that we end up seeing The Big Ten splitting Tier 1 rights between ESPN and Fox. Adding CBS to that would be too complicated and too risky. The three of them taking turns means getting the top match ups in The Big Ten, such as Meyer vs Harbaugh isn't going to happen every year or even every other year.

“That's a good question,” Delany admitted. “I guess one of the things I've always viewed as I came up (playing basketball at North Carolina) is our games were sold out. Every game was on TV -- maybe not national, but regional TV. The athletes still thought of themselves as college students. I played with nine guys who played in the ABA or NBA, but they still thought of themselves as college students. Maybe the professional dream comes earlier now, but it doesn't mean the educational aspect can't live next to TV and sold-out stadiums. I just don't believe that.

What did NBA players make back then? 20-30,000 a year?

He wasn't dragged kicking and screaming into:
-Creating a hugely influential and profitable network
-Conference expansion
The playoff is not the only big thing that's happened in college football over the past decade or so.
