Really? Who you have in mind?
Nobody good. Just a pulse. Another body.
Let me be clear, I don't think he will have a good year.
Just saying, we're all frustrated and pissed, but he'll be the coach.
Let it play out.
Sucks, but nothing to do but watch it.
Should be good drama at the least.
The time comes when you just have to cut-bait, period. This is absurd.

it's worth 2.6 million plus having to bump up someone on the staff's pay to a HC salary just to have him gone now? Or we can let him coach, shave money off the buyouts and have 8 months to find our next coach.

Yep.. may as well nose-dive the program into the ground another year.

This was the scenario 48 hrs ago and will be the scenario 48 hrs from now.

he will be the coach. Rash fans like me wish we could just cut bait now, but it's not the best time, realistically.
I do get the feeling that this season will most likely be his last. No inside sources, just the handwriting on the wall.
As soon as this all happened I wrote my buddy a text and said "no way he survives this." The only "fired now" scenario I would be ok with is the give Damon a test run. Outside of that there just is no point in doing anything right now.

RE: Pastner will coach Memphis next year
If a change was going to be made the best time to do it from a basketball program standpoint was after this past season.
I'm on board with this being his last season no matter what (does average / bad = fired; does good / great = leaves for another job).
However it works out, him leaving after this season will result in a (minimum) 2-3 year rebuilding period that probably could have been avoided by replacing him this year.
His rosters have become incredibly unstable with many jucos and graduate transfers......
We could have Bruce Pearl standing on the sideline this year loading up the next two recruiting classes instead of facing a scorched earth situation. I guess the buyouts both ways were just too much; I sure hope this means that we were spending the resources on a P5 invite..........

Here's the thing...Austin was going to be the best player on the team, but if he's not here it just becomes "next in line..."
Look at Dayton last year, lost three starters before the season and Archie Miller's philosophy was "next."
While the team won't be nearly as much of an inside team, they still ooze with talent. Shaq (McDaa) Lawson (McDaa) and other 4 star Lawson plus Markel, Burrell, Tarrant and Kedren will be able to lead a highly (I hate this term but it fits) long and athletic team.

RC had to announce his retirement before we got into the Big East. I'm wondering if it's going to take Pastner leaving to get into the Big 12...

Spot on - the athletic office has chosen to focus on football - all of the bball donations are still minuscule when compared to the comparison of P5 payouts vs everyone else.
The future of tiger athletics depends on football more than basketball and given bball viewership is going down while the p5 vs non p5 payout gap increases every year, I don't see that changing.
Has pastner done enough? That's debatable, but when coupled with the buyout and the P5 football landscape, keeping him is the right choice for tiger athletics (note I did not say tiger basketball).
At a micro level, this situation is frustrating. In the long run, it's the right thing to do.

I like the talent on paper. But if Pastner has to coach it, then it will go undeveloped and undisciplined, and we are looking at anther 12-14 loss season.
If Stoudemire coaches then.....

And now we are really going to have to hope for a miracle; namely that Marshall is average and can give us 10 good minutes.

Where it will really hurt is on defense. AN did protect the goal, nobody else played defense. If the Tigers can't play defense, nothing will change.

This is the year to run run run.
Conceivably at least two deep at all positions except center, so use depth and athleticism to your advantage.

Except that we don't have great athleticism. Many of the players that are probably going to get minutes (Kedren, Lawson, Lawson, Woodson, Marshall) are not athletic. I would say that Shaq, Tarrant and Burrell are, and I would put Markel somewhere in the middle. I suppose Lawson will be undersized and faster than most 4's he plays against. I don't know much about Broddie and Martin, but it's hard to say how much they will contribute.
Also, I consider us to be two deep at center with a raw Marshall in the fold, but barely 1 deep at the 4, with Lawson being undersized. We do have a lot of players that can play the 3, but lately playing the 3 at Memphis has been like being a drummer for Spinal Tap.

I say fire him now and let Damon coach this season. That's very unlikely to happen but I do not think he can do anything (outside a Final Four Run) to save his job at this point. I think he was likely gone one way or another after this season anyway but this AN stuff makes it inevitable.

Yep, we're really thin at the 4-5 positions now. But hey, Pastner loves the 3 / 4 guard offense, right? Well, here we go again.
