Brock Ks facing Chapman throwing 101 mph.

Chapman stikes out the side with his final pitch vs Texiera at 102 mph. Wow.

Good job by both coaches getting all position players in the game.

Good point, but they are still all coaches to me.

So is Wayne a coach or a manager?

In the UK, what we call head coach is referred to as manager, and the term coach is used for what we call assistant coaches. Baseball actually draws a lot more than some people realize from its cricket heritage (it's why box scores list runs before hits, for one thing, and why a batter can advance to first base if the catcher fails to catch strike three), and the manager designation appears to be one of those things. One thing that did not come across is that skipper in Brit terminology refers to the team captain.

A fascinating book about the Medieval (yes, that old) and Early Modern origins of baseball is "'Baseball Before We Knew It: A Search for the Roots of the Game", by David Block. The evidence is overwhelming that baseball was a known children's game in England by the 1700s. As one might expect, its evolution before that is murkier, but the research is quite interesting.

Here's the NYT review of it:
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/10/books/...uiced.html

For anyone who is interested not only in history (what happened in the past) but also in the process of historical research (how do we figure out what happened in the past), this book is fascinating.
