RE: CUSA historical top 5's
Tech played 3 of the Top 5 CUSA teams of all time:
1. Tulane beat us 63-30 in New Orleans. (They beat the crap out of us and we weren't bad that year... very good Tulane team)
3. Southern Miss beat us 19-17 in Hattiesburg. (USM made a last minute FG in the rain and wind to win it)
5. Houston beat us 35-34 in Ruston. (Keenum brought Houston back from a 34-7 hole to win it at the end)
Pretty cool.

Still can't figure out how Dykes blew a 34-7 lead late in the 3rd quarter against Houston...

One of the biggest WTF moments I've had watching Tech football. Don't know how we handed that one to them.

Jeff Bower is without question the best football coach to ever walk the sidelines in Conference USA.
When comparing the records of other coaches in the league’s 20-year history, they all pale in comparison to Bower’s run from 1996-2007 at Southern Miss after the program entered C-USA.
USM won four conference titles under Bower. No other program has more than three C-USA titles to this point.
Bower had a 119-83-1 overall coaching record and went an impressive 93-54 in Conference USA, putting up winning marks in all 12 seasons while in the league. Against league competition, Bower was 63-24.
C-USA has been home to a lot of coaching talent, but none of them built a winner like Bower did.
And the idiots in Hattiesburg got rid of the best coach. Brilliant....

And yet they still defend it, even though Bower's W/L record would have surpassed what they've had since easily...
If Bower would have had a couple of losing seasons, then maybe I could see their issue... but he didn't have one. I guess they thought he should win big every year...
But, few do that!
Even someone like Gary Patterson has losing seasons. He did his last year in CUSA.

Yep, had 14 straight winning seasons and got run off by some of the biggest idiots to ever walk the earth. Bower was taken for granted. Well, those idiots got what they deserved in the end.

RE: CUSA historical top 5's
An argument can be made for Skip Holtz as a top 5 All-time CUSA coach.
51 wins 35 Losses
2 CUSA Titles
1 CUSA Division Title
7 seasons with two teams

I thought the same thing when I first read the "coaches" summary. Skip Holtz's winning percentage (59.3%) while coaching in CUSA is better than George O'Leary's (57.7%), and his 2 CUSA titles and 1 division title certainly put him above some of the others in championships. Seems really stupid to leave Skip Holtz out of the mix.

If Skip Holtz is in the conversation, then when does Doc Holliday, with his .615 winning percentage (40-25), undefeated bowl record, 2 division titles, 1 conference title, and 1 national ranking enter the conversation, enter the conversation ?

I'm not so sure Bower would've gone 12-2 in 2011. It's debatable whether he would've avoided two or three losing seasons since 2007. The quality of our conference mates (and former mates) is a bit better than it was ten years ago. In Bower's prime his program was head and shoulders above the others simply because the others were not very good.
If Bower was such a good coach, why didn't any other team hire him? The changing landscape has contributed more to the demise of Southern Miss football than the firing of Bower.
