Coast Of Attendance at MAC Schools
Thought I'd start a new thread since the other one went a bit off track.

The COA number has already prompted some P5 coaches to say they will use it in recruiting. If there is a $2,000 difference between MAC school A and B, how much does that come into play in a recruit's decision?

From the Toledo Blade:

Toledo COA $3,830
BG COA $3,250

These numbers are for full scholarship athletes. Partial scholarship athletes will get a pro-rated amount that may just be applied to tuition, at least at some schools.

Any other COA numbers out there so we can make a MAC list?

RE: Coast Of Attendance at MAC Schools
Ball State's is $3,050 based on a student newspaper article from March

http://www.ballstatedaily.com/article/20...attendance

What's funny is that a lot of articles talk about conferences making sure the numbers are similar, or about the potential for abuse by power schools. These numbers are the same numbers given to the federal government to determine student loan, grant, and scholarship amounts for all students, not just athletes. It is out of reach from conference offices and would be a federal violation with potentially severe consequences for artificial and/or selective inflation.

RE: Coast Of Attendance at MAC Schools
UMass is $1,600 from June 16th article.

Quote:The difference between what UMass scholarships covered under the old rules vs. the new ones is approximately $1,600 per full scholarship. The figure differs from school to school. The additional money is designed to help athletes cover living expenses beyond tuition, room and board, and other basics that had previously been covered.
..
New UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford said the approximate cost for the entire UMass athletic department would be about $475,000 per year.

He discussed cost of attendance with Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy shortly after being hired. “I said, ‘This is important.’ The chancellor will help us with about $260,000 worth. We haven’t fully funded it yet. I have to look into the budget and see how I can free up some more money. It’s about $475,000 to do every student athlete that’s on scholarship or some sort,” Bamford said. “Ideally we’ll get to $475,000 in the next two years. That’s my goal. If we are only at $260,000, we can take care of the basketballs. If we take care of football, I can’t add another men’s sport to that yet. We’d do all of the women’s sports we possibly could.”

If UMass covered football (85 scholarships) in addition to basketball (13 for men, 15 for women), the school would also have to give at least 83 other women athletes (or equivalent scholarships) the increased cost of attendance to remain Title IX compliant. That would cost $313,600 so the athletic department would have to make up the difference of $53,600 from the chancellor’s $260,000.

“We’re trying to get our arms around if we do football, how we match the 85 we do in football,” Bamford said.

$53,600 does not seem like a big obstacle.

Just as a benchmark I believe the Big Ten ranges from 4,400 at Penn State to a preliminary number of about $1,300 for Michigan State.

Actually, it's $4788 for Penn State down to $1760 for Purdue. There are a number of schools nationally over $5000 including Tennessee, Louisville, Auburn and Mississippi State. On the other end is Southern Cal at $1580.

Looks like I'm going to answer my own question. Go to collegedata.com, enter the school name and click on the highlighted name, put the cursor on the school name on the next page and select money matters from the drop down list. Look for other expenses under tuition and expenses.

Kent has by far the biggest COA at $4259, while Central Michigan is the lowest at $1170.

That's pretty surprising. From what I've seen, rural/small town schools tend to have a higher CoA than their more urban counterparts.

* We still have this season.
Noting if you use the books and Supplies and other expenses the COA should be $2,400, which implies that some of that ($800) is already provided to the student Athletes.

RE: Coast Of Attendance at MAC Schools
Starting this fall UMass will offer COA to every student athlete on scholarship.

Quote:UMass wants its athletes to be smart with their new influx of cash, as well. Beginning next month, full-scholarship athletes will be required to attend a financial seminar that provides a crash course on managing money.

"We generated a kind of pseudo-financial aid agreement, similar to the current financial aid agreement, that just talks about what the expectations are for them in the classroom, in the community and, obviously, in competition," Bamford said.

Previously, UMass had been prepared to cover COA for its men's and women's basketball teams beginning with the 2015-16 season, as per a mandate from the Atlantic 10. Coverage for 85 football scholarships and other women's scholarships as required by Title IX would have likely also been instituted.

But even with the expansion to cover COA for all scholarship athletes, Bamford said the school feels "a little bit fortunate that our cost of attendance gap number is a lot lower than other schools."

"A $400,000 nut over one year is significant by any stretch, but I think some of my (Atlantic 10) colleagues were dealing with $2,000, $3,000 and even $4,000 per student-athlete," he said. "That's upwards of $700,000 to $900,000 or even to $1 million

Which is why the full name for the reform is "full cost of attendance". I am not going to wade through the NCAA manuals, but I would not be surprised if its already allowed for an athletic department to buy textbooks and lend them to athletes for the classes they are taking.

That amount adds up almost exactly with what was saved by eliminating baseball.
