Montreal vs. Calgary. Random thoughts:

1) Calgary uses the SMU Mustang logo. I don't know whether to be flattered or irate.
2) There is a definite "arena football" feel to the game.
3) What is an "Alouette"?
4) The end zones are ridiculously big; receivers can run around all day.
5) Pro football on July 4th weekend is just wrong.
6) The crowd doesn't seem as rowdy as an American crowd.

On the bright side:

1) Some players who can't make it in the NFL are able to make a living up there.
2) It's better than watching CNN, Fox, MSNBC, or the shopping channels.
3) The NFL and college football can't be too far away.

Ok, so i turned it on....Canadian football is horrible. Only 3 downs??? End zones the size of Texas (their playing on a soccer pitch) 3 minute warning at end of game...they just changed crap to be different. None of it makes the game better.

I don't like the 3 downs vs. 4. I do like the backfield in motion. An alouette is a bird / a lark. I like the no fair catch.

They didn't really change anything. Football was Rugby in Canada until the early 1900s when they developed rules similar to Camp's, but different enough to accommodate the bigger fields they had before they adopted these new rules. Canada's football rules evolved separately from our game starting 110 years ago, so they didn't change the rules to be different, they just didn't make the same changes we did.

The one thing I don't like about the CFL is the Rouge. It's a point that isn't even earned.

The CFL isn't a bad game to watch. The problem is I don't have enough investment in the teams to stay interested. Granted I did watch some of a game last week because I thought a ECU player or two might be amongst the teams.

Don't they have one extra man on the field too?

I actually bought a Toronto Argonauts hat back in the day when I was up in Toronto and Rahib Ismail (SP? ...of ND/Heisman fame) went there to play his first few years of pro football.

The players are smaller than in the NFL. I didn't see any Vince Wilforks.

I like the CFL. The league and teams all have histories and established fan bases. The CFL franchises are older or as old as the NFL franchises. And an American football fan will know about half of the players from American college football.
The differences in the game also make it somewhat refreshing and unique. I remember watching CFL football on ESPN in the early 80's when they would play games on tape delay in the afternoons. Glad ESPN is starting to air some of the TSN telecasts in the US. They are already produced and ESPN owns 25% of TSN so sure it is cheap, live, high quality football broadcasts ESPN.

I also went to a handful of Mad Dogs games and the rule that I struggled with more than any was the ball fumbled out of bounds possession rule.

When a ball is fumbled out of bounds, it belongs to the team whose player last touched the ball; not the player that last had controlled possession. I suppose that may be "accepted" in international sports, but it's clearly contrary to US football or any basketball rule that I know of.

The US experiment for the CFL clearly failed, but I do enjoy watching a CFL game in the offseason. Having 2 Roughrider/Rough Rider) teams was a bit bizarre.

While it may be contrary to American football, it is hardly different than basketball rules where the last person to touch it before it goes out, even without gaining possession, causes the ball to go to the other team.

I respectfully ask that you read the rule and see if you still agree with the second point in your response.

There's a reason why every player in the vacinity of a BB out of bounds call tries to look like an innocent puppy dog. :)

edit...... since you're not responding, I'll just add that the rule is clearly different than US basketball in that if you're the last player to touch the ball on it's way out of bounds the ball is in you're team's control and not the opponent like basketball.

Backfield in motion is the only thing I wish we would borrow.
