As for which sport people watch, there will be plenty of people to watch both. If I were running a college in Texas, or California or any state in the southwest, I'd make sure we had men's and women's soccer teams because that's where future interest is going to grow, but college football will still retain interest.

Agreed and the projected Hispanic growth is even greater in California and to a lesser extent than California and Texas, the state of Florida. Soccer, baseball, and basketball all ahead of american football in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Obviously, football will still retain interest in these areas, but the projected population growth rate does not necessarily correspond with a corresponding increase in football viewership, but might show an increase in viewers in soccer, baseball, and basketball.

Cheers,
Neil

I think this probably has more to do with Texas and Texas politicians than anything else.

Texas and Texas politicians have nothing to do with the lack of OUvsRice/Houston games. OU already plays two to three games a year in Texas. They have no need for more. If they're gonna play Rice or Houston it will be in Norman, and on a one-off basis.

Not true, we have quite a few fans in Houston. We recruit a bunch of students from Houston as well.

Houston deserves it as much as anyone else, I just don't see the advantage for the B12. With 4 Tex schools I expect they would have no trouble getting a B12 network in Houston. This is all about $$$ first second and 3rd. Cincy is a new market, decent sized, UCF or USF same thing, Memphis as well.

BYU is a better program, has a huge alumni/fan base all over the country... I think if this happens, the B12 will crumble soon enough... any non-Texas pieces that are useful to another conference will leave.

I think 5 is too many, but there are definitely differences from SWC days. Rice and SMU, the two with the weakest fan support, and duplicates in Houston and DFW, aren't in (as well as A&M). Big state schools from Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa and W. Virginia are in. Also Texas had 17 million people in 1990. Now its about 27 million.

Texas population projected to be 54 million plus by 2050.

... that's under a scenario that assumes a very high rate of immigration into Texas between now and 2050.

At a lower rate of immigration, the projection would be around 40 million Texans in 2050.

In that "big projection", about 55% of Texans will be Hispanic in 2050, and only about 22% Caucasian. So maybe Texas schools should shift their focus from college football to fútbol?

Here's an article with tables showing those Texas population projections:
http://blog.chron.com/insidepolicy/2014/...2010-2050/

lol.....I think Dynamo attendance will probably increase. That said, plenty of Hispanics at Texan and Coog games right now. I suspect that wont change. By the way, a significant portion of that population increase is current US residents flowing from job poor portions of the county to Texas, which is creating jobs at a faster rate than most any other state.

Those numbers are all great.. but how does this help the other Texas schools recruit in an area they already own... and TV ratings.... how does that help? How does Houston being in the league help Texas beat A/M to a five-star in metro Houston?

Texas is going national with recruiting under Strong, they are recruiting Florida heavily.

Actually the projected growth in the Hispanic population is much greater in Texas than California.

Per the high-growth-rate Texas projection linked above in post #17, Texas will have 20.4 million more Hispanics in 2050 than in 2010. California's projection for 2050 says there will be 9.6 million more Hispanics in California in 2050 than in 2010.

RE: Frank has UH On The Short List for B12 Expansion
I understand projections that say Hispanics do not appreciate American Football but when you look at the massive Hispanic following that the Dallas Cowboys have, well I just think that the NFL needs to reach out more to Hispanics and more Hispanic kids need to make it to the college level and then to the NFL level. When that happens, more Hispanics will follow American Football, simple.

The NFL needs to push regular season games to be played in Mexico City if they truly want to insert the NFL into Hispanic Culture. So many Hispanics here still have ties to family in Mexico and they all follow what happens in Mexico City.

If the PAC truly wants to help themselves out, they will start letting their coaches know that they need to expand their efforts at finding Hispanic recruits. They exist but they will need to be coached more at the college level before they are ready. Many of their high school programs aren't as well funded or as well coached. That is why the PAC needs to be aggressive and forward thinking in doing what they can to boost football in the Hispanic culture in America.

I stand corrected. I was looking at total hispanic projected population by state in 2050, not growth rate, where California was ahead of Texas on total Hispanic population.

Cincinnati and Houston to the BigXII. I'm down for that. I've got a lot of respect for both programs, and they're both investing in all the right places and bring a lot to the table. I still think Memphis makes sense for the BigXII though...

RE: Frank has UH On The Short List for B12 Expansion
I think Cincinnati and Houston speak for themselves in terms of what they bring to the table.

Memphis, I keep coming back to them for a number of reasons. The BigXII doesn't really need to worry about strengthening it's football brand (even though Memphis is on the uptick at the moment). Memphis would bring in some solid content during the basketball season.

What does Memphis bring to the table?
--Basketball credibility to a conference that could use it
--Great TV market
--Great, new recruiting grounds
--Passionate, loyal fan base
--Bridges a gap on the map

Memphis is investing, and investing heavily. The fact that they have FedEX money behind 'em sure as hell doesn't hurt either. I wouldn't count Memphis out just yet. Perhaps a suitable 4th could be found and all four could take the BigXII to 14?

Memphis football was good last year... their previous winning season was 2007. For perspective, UConn has had 5 winning seasons since 2007 and all 5 were in a power(ish) conference. No, I'm not advocated for UConn in the Big 12 - but I think BYU is the right choice.

BYU is a national brand more than Memphis. Much better football history.

Basketball credibility - I looked at the past 10 years.. Memphis is a little better, even post Calapari, but BYU still has made the NCAA tournament 7 of the last 8 years, including a regional final (Jimmer!)

I won't even get into the recruiting brand that is BYU. There are BYU fans everywhere. Let's use some logic here though.. If a 5 star guy is in Memphis... is he going to go to Alabama or Oklahoma? I don't think the games being in TV in Memphis matter? A three star guy in Memphis... let's say... Georgia or Texas Tech... games are in on Memphis? (The SEC Network is everywhere?)

Also - Do you remember how Jabari Parker had BYU in his final choices of schools?

I still do not think Houston will get the nod. It has nothing to do with Houston personally, but they do not have the tv market since Big 12 is already represented there with the Longhorn Network in the area. To have a Big 12 Network? They need to expand into new markets.

Cincinnati, East Carolina, Old Dominion, UCF, Memphis, Northern Illinois, Stony Brook for their academics, Toledo, Missouri State, North Dakota State, Colorado State, Georgia Southern, Southern Miss., Minn.-Duluth, Central Michigan, Ball State and so forth are all in a heavy populated are.

I don't think BYU, Boise State or other MWC schools west of the Rockies would just spread the conference too far away. Just take the best 4 without a Texas school, and you could get more money that way.

I could see Texas leaving to be Independent to keep the Longhorns Network which Houston could be brought in for a Big 12 Network.

I love the insecurity of UConn fans who feel the need to come over here and thump their chests and tout their program, even when it's not about them in the slightest and I'm not even trolling at that particular moment. Seriously, that **** gets old. UConn's not going to the BigXII. Let that go.

Houston may not "add" a new market. But there is something to be said about playing defense and not ceding the city of Houston to the SEC and Texas A&M.

You can turn the table on the SEC as well. Take UCF, and you are in SEC country. Take Memphis as well, and you are in the heart of the SEC country.

Unlikely. Oklahoma has had established inroads into the major Texas recruiting grounds, including Houston, for decades. They raid Texas for talent the way Michigan raids Ohio for talent.
