RE: ND/Navy set to play 2016 game in Jacksonville, Florida
"Notre Dame's football scheduling aspires to hit major locales across the country every season, but also specifically targets the most fertile recruiting territories in the country in California, Florida and Texas.

Brian Kelly and his staff place a high value on a recruiting presence in Florida.

• California is covered with annual games at Stanford in odd-numbered years and USC in the even-numbered ones. There had been reported conversations about Notre Dame and Navy meeting in San Diego in 2016, and the possibility might still loom in 2018.

• With Notre Dame now in the ACC as a partial football member, visits to The Sunshine State will be more common. It played at Florida State last season, is slated to be in Jacksonville in 2016 and visits Miami to play the Hurricanes on Nov. 11, 2017. (It then hosts Florida State on Nov. 10, 2018.)

• Notre Dame has a home-and-home with the University of Texas in 2015-16, opening in Austin in 2016 before facing Army in San Antonio on Nov. 12, 2016 (the week after the Navy game) for the Shamrock Series outing. It will be its third visit to Texas for the Shamrock Series, having been in San Antonio in 2009 (vs. Washington State) and in Arlington in 2013 (vs. Arizona State). Texas A&M has been scheduled down the line in 2024-25.

One other state where Notre Dame wants a more active presence is Georgia. The Fighting Irish host ACC foe Georgia Tech this Sept. 19 and have scheduled the University of Georgia in 2017 and 2019. In 2019, Notre Dame is slated to play at Georgia on Sept. 21 and at Georgia Tech on Oct. 19."

Hail Terry,

Gee, sounds like UT and ND joining the ACC full while the Irish keeping the USC game solves this recruiting issue nicely. 03-wink

Or just stay the same and play recurring series and Shamrock Series games in Texas and Florida?

The only thing it says to me is that Notre Dame is willing open its mind to new scheduling possibilities that weren't there before.

ND has scheduled this way for some time. The Shamrock Series games started in 2009.

ND has played neutral site games in pro stadiums for a long time.....this is not new.

Notre Dame scheduled a chump with a national name. Imagine that. Navy doesn't stand the snowball's chance.

No, you didn't miss anything. ND/Navy has played every year since 1927, a total of 88 games.

I have much less interest in playing Navy now that it has dropped football independence and joined a conference.

I think that ND has repaid the debt arising out of the World War II assist the U.S. Navy gave to ND.

I would schedule current independents BYU and Army instead.

Jack Swarbrick seems to feel otherwise, though.

I'm not saying its a brand new approach but they are taking a progressive scheduling approach (a better way of saying it).

Out of curiosity, is that Swarbrick's call? Or does the university administration get the final say on major football decisions (and dropping Navy would certainly be a major decision).

Good move. Georgia is underrated as a recruiting ground. It doesn't get the same publicity as Florida/Texas/California, but is right up there in the same ballpark in terms of actual football talent produced. Every major SEC school tries to raid Georgia for talent, and it's why Georgia itself is almost always loaded with talent even though their coaching tends to squander it.

It would be Father John Jenkins and Jack Swarbrick together, I would think.

It would not take a Board of Trustees vote (or any other university input) to drop a school, even Navy, from the schedule.

I don't recall any special permission needed to drop Michigan. Jack Swarbrick just handed the Michigan AD a letter.

Despite all the history and shared-connections (Georgia had an ND man as Head Coach for about 10 years), the two teams have only played one time. Curious how these things develop.
