I think that ND has repaid the debt arising out of the World War II assist the U.S. Navy gave to ND.

I would schedule current independents BYU and Army instead.

Jack Swarbrick seems to feel otherwise, though.

The good thing about keeping Navy, which you already know, is that they can be used to play games all over the country and still draw a decent crowd. Surprised ND doesn't use them more in this vein than they already do.

Cheers,

Yep they have a bunch of pluses for ND. History, tradition, name value, relatively easy win, and a willingness to play games at other locations around the country. I really can't see any reason why ND would ever drop Navy.

This would not really be a Shamrock series game would it? It is a Navy "home" game, not a ND Home game.

Correct. Last year's Shamrock game (IIRC) was Purdue (@Indianapolis). This year it's BC (@Fenway Park, Boston). Next year it's Army (@Alamo Dome, San Antonio)

I know Jacksonville has a Naval base, but is it all that exciting of a neutral site location for ND? I've also understood it to be that recruits can't attend off-campus games for unofficial/official visits.

They have played each other in Dublin, Ireland in 1996 and 2012.

They have also played games in Baltimore, Cleveland, D.C, Chicago, and New Jersey.

There is a lot of talk about the two schools playing a game in San Diego.

As far as I can tell, you can have an unofficial visit so to speak, but the difference is they have to pay for their own tickets and transportation if it is not a home game. But since most of ND's shamrock series games are actually designated as home games (this one excluded), I am not sure how that works. The rules don't specific "on campus," they use the term "home athletic event."

I believe so but have not looked it up.

My comment above was inartful. I should have said:

"ND has scheduled this way for a long time with Navy and has played in venues all over the country, even prior to the Shamrock Series in 2009."

I didn't mean to imply that this is a Shamrock Series game. ND has played all over way before the advent of the Shamrock Series.

This is just another game in Florida for exposure for ND, that is why it wants to schedule this game.

ND wants to use its status to schedule lots of games in California, Texas, Florida and Georgia, among others, for recruiting exposure and to fight the Southern coaches telling recruits that "ND is too far away and your family and friends will never see you play in person."

That won't carry as much weight if ND is playing games in the Southeast every year. It also is a way to get recruits to the game on an unofficial visit without having to pay airfare to Chicago or South Bend and other expenses.

2015 ND schedule note, from this article:

Yes. I knew that. It makes me smile.

The Big Ten just doesn't fit in with ND's "Southern and Western Strategy" regarding football scheduling.

If ND asked, I don't think Navy would have any hard feelings about not playing the Irish every year. And I've not met any Navy fan who was happy with Gladchuk deal to move Navy to the AAC.

I know several who are quite happy.

What were their reasons? By joining a conference Navy Football has lost the ability to play many of its more traditional match-ups due to scheduling commitments. Games versus Pitt, WVU, MD and Rutgers aren't going to show up on the schedule again for a long time.

If I had to guess it is because several of the teams you listed couldn't play them as often anymore anyway due to their other commitments. Especially WVU and Rutgers whose conferences are at or going to nine conference games.

Scheduling is certainly one thing.

AAC gets them into fertile/essential FL recruiting area regularly and the West division gets them into fertile/essential recruiting ground of TX regularly.

AAC bowl money (especially if AAC champ is highest rated G5 champ) is another good thing.

BTW, Maryland (games in 2005 and 2010, but have to go back to 1965 to find next most recent game), Pitt (4 games in last 8 years but none in the 17 years before that), and especially WVU (only met 8 times -- twice in the 1990s, others were 1963 and earlier) won't exactly be missed on the schedule. It will be odd for them to not play Rutgers regularly (16 games since the 1990s including 6 of the last 10 years)

We'll see how long they stay with the AAC. I don't give it long. The reality is locking up 11 games a year with the AAC slate, ND, Army and Air Force is insanity for them. That leaves them no room to schedule west coast, midwestern and northeastern games. And reading between the tea leaves both Maryland and Rutgers would like to start (in Rutgers' case continue) regular (not necessarily annual) meetings of the rivalries. Plus they like to play an FCS team every year in recent years for bowl eligibility purposes and I would assume to give the "undersized" lines a break from the action of playing FBS and specifically P5/ND-sized lines.

All of that being said, its a long standing tradition that both schools administrations and a majority of fans on both sides clearly appreciate. Too much tradition has gone by the way side, its nice to see this is one of the few that haven't.

I have to assume that the #1 rival for Navy - by far - is Army. Notre Dame is probably a fun game for them, but with little chance of winning I'm not sure how much they would consider it to be a "rivalry".

They most certainly consider it a rivalry. It's also a very good recruiting tool.
