Jack Swarbrick seems to feel otherwise, though.

If ND asked, I don't think Navy would have any hard feelings about not playing the Irish every year. And I've not met any Navy fan who was happy with Gladchuk deal to move Navy to the AAC.

Hmm...I thought Navy would have to have some good support from the fans to move to a conference.

By joining a conference Navy Football has lost the ability to play many of its more traditional match-ups due to scheduling commitments. Games versus Pitt, WVU, MD and Rutgers aren't going to show up on the schedule again for a long time.

If I had to guess it is because several of the teams you listed couldn't play them as often anymore anyway due to their other commitments. Especially WVU and Rutgers whose conferences are at or going to nine conference games.

However, I think if Navy was still Indy they would be counted as a 'P5" school for the ACC and SEC teams. So they would have other teams to schedule than some Big Ten schools.

I know several who are quite happy.

What were their reasons?

The following blog, written by an ardent Navy fan, gives the many reasons that Navy is glad to be a football member of the AAC:

BYU and Notre Dame already have four games contracted. Just need to sit down and put them on the schedule....

Would that work for Air Force? Maybe they should leave the MWC and go independent.

Not sure but AF has a really good relationship with CSU, WYO and NM which makes is different to make that decision. I think they could make it work for football and putting there other sports in a more competitive conference. (which I think it has been discussed before because other than football, the other sports (especially the women side) have not be that competitive in the MW).

I've also heard that AFA is reluctant to cut ties with CSU and Wyoming. But if they did want to become a football indy, they'd have no problem getting 12 games a year, and the MWC would just replace AFA with UTEP.

The #NotreDame-Navy game in 2018 will be played in San Diego. That's Oct. 27 at Qualcomm Stadium.

Yes. I knew that. It makes me smile.

The Big Ten just doesn't fit in with ND's "Southern and Western Strategy" regarding football scheduling.

I don't know that I'd call it "Southern and Western", maybe Coastal and Southern. Yes the ACC is primarily southern in composition, but there just seems to be a push to play anywhere along the coasts and down south. (AKA not in the midwest since there's already 6 to 7 home games in the midwest as it is)

I actually think that Navy moving the Notre Dame game around to places outside the northeast more frequently is smart. I still think joining the AAC is a bad move for them simply because it reduces them to just 1 OOC game not spoken for. That means they don't get to play any traditional rivals outside their big 3 almost ever. That also means little variety in where they're going and/or who's coming in.

Other than Army, Air Force and Notre Dame I don't know what games would be considered very important to Navy outside of their conference. They can now play Temple and UConn more regularly.

Not "Western"?

Every year:

Southern Cal?

Stanford?

Recent games/series:

Arizona State?

Oklahoma?

Texas?

BYU?

Shamrock Series games in San Antonio?

Today's announced game in San Diego?

Navy traditional opponents outside of the academies and ND:

Duke: 40 games (used to be a major rival)
Penn State: 38 games (this one surprised me)
Pitt: 39 games
UVA: 39 games

Other former eastern indies like SU, RU, and BC all have match-ups in the 20's.

Could adding Navy for football only to the ACC give Notre Dame an extra ACC game? Could be more money that way.

To be fair I said Coastal and Southern meaning they want to play on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as well as down South which (I'm inferring to Oklahoma and Texas on eastward.) BYU and Arizona State would indicate more than just coastal to be sure. Unless they're going to start putting annual games against intermountain west/southwestern teams on the schedule, I think my description is fairly accurate.

And of Rutgers' 24 matchups with Navy, 16 have come since 1992. Meaning in the last 23 seasons we've played about 70% of the time. In the last quarter century Rutgers and Navy had become priorities for one another and that series basically doesn't get played with their new scheduling model. With Rutgers going from 7 conference games in the old Big East in 2012 to 9 in the Big Ten starting in 2016, it would have made it difficult to play as frequently for sure, but there would definitely have been room for 1 of Navy and Army most years. I'm sure Rutgers and Army will continue to see each other with some level of regularity in the future.

Additionally, although only rarely played there seemed to be more genuine interest in making the Crab Bowl a more regular affair with Maryland. Going to the AAC killed that off. While going from 8 conference games in the ACC to 9 in the Big Ten (like with Rutgers) makes it more challenging to do, but far from impossible.

And the Pitt series was renewed very recently, which will almost assuredly be the last time for a while.

I would prefer a mix of teams from AAC, ACC and Big Ten playing OOC games against each other. Navy, Maryland, UNC, Rutgers, UConn, Penn State, Duke, Wake Forest, Pitt, Virginia, Boston College, Temple, Army, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. If that arrangement could be made then that's preferable to scheduling the same two/three schools individually.

This will probably happen once all of the dust settles.

I would still keep Toledo, Northern Illinois and Bowling Green on the schedule. They would be considered strong teams.
