Enjoy........

Quote:Must confess, I do check the “Dog Pound”, the contemporary NIU fan chat room forum, on a regular basis for news, rumors, varied opinions, and sometimes sheer amusement. Other times, they drive me nuts.

Quote:Now, folks, this is the “Dog Pound” topper in that department, sorry.

Example No. 2: Early in June, 91-year-old NIU Hall of Famer Larry Brink became the oldest living ex-Chicago Bear, according to the NFL team’s official website. Sure enough, somebody started an “Oldest living Bear is (a) NIU player” thread on the “Dog Pound.” As I type this sentence, it has generated only one response – something to the effect that Brink was an athlete here in (gasp) 1947 – and 524 views in a month.

Quote:And, none of the Huskie-savvy “Dog Pound” vets knew any of this or even Googled Brink? No one? Wow

I swear sometimes I mistake Mike Korcek for Grandpa Simpson.

What point is he trying to make? Someone provided the information and we took it in? Does he want us to have a 40 response thread on the topic? What the heck would we talk about? Great, oldest living Bear went to NIU. End of thread.

hahaha Korcek is unbelievable.

I swear to God if I have to read another "respect the past" article, comment, blowhole BS...

Nobody "paved the way" for anyone, anyway, anywhere, anyhow. I don't care if you played in 1905 or 2015. Jordan Lynch was born Jordan Lynch, he worked hard at what he did and he made the most of his opportunities at NIU.

But guess what? So did every other person that found success playing football at any freaking level. It had nothing to do with anyone that came before him. In 2215, if some athlete plays at the top of his game and garners numerous accolades, it's not because of Jordan Lynch, or George Bork, or Chandler Harnish, or Stacey Robinson. It's because he was good at what he did at the time that he did it. Stop diluting people's accomplishments. It's annoying and scientifically/statistically irrelevant.

I normally enjoy reading his pieces, but this is a pile of cliches wrapped in a garbage bag.

I agree, except for the "Normally enjoy reading his pieces" part.

When i saw that thread, I said, "oh interesting, very cool!" It's not like there's anyone in here that remembers him playing.

RE: HW Korcek: 50 Greats at HS. (And he shoots a bottle rocket at The DogPound)
I have grown tired of Korcek's "I wish you all were as smart as me" attitude. Several years ago I went back and forth with him via email when I suggested a particular person for consideration into the Athletics Hall of Fame. His response was to quote T.J. Lux's career statistics and to ask me if I really thought that this person belonged in the same club as T.J. Lux. I might be wrong, but I have always thought that a hall of fame is set up to celebrate a school's athletic accomplishments, not become an exclusive club. If we compare all other athletes to Lux, the Hall of Fame is going to be a lonely place. Maybe I took it the wrong way, but I didn't appreciate his condescending manner.

I was a student at NIU from 1975-1979, when Korcek and Bud Nangle ran the SID office. Never in my four years do I recall their office promoting the exploits and accomplishments of Larry Brink, who had played 30 years before.

Now 40 years later I have to read that I don't respect the past?

Wouldn't this be Mike's fault that while he was the SID he didn't get the word out to the students and fans about how Larry Brink is NIU football royalty?

Heck as a student in 99-05 I didn't even know who Leshon Johnson was.

Most of us on this board try not to live in the past, especially if the past was decades before we were even born. There aren't many posts about Reino Nori on here either. Big deal.

Also, Brink played so long ago it wasn't in Huskie stadium so he wouldn't be one of the 50 greats at HS, so I don't know what Korcek's point is. He reminds me of the movie Grumpy Old Men.

If he's mad at the observation I made in which I said that half of the 50 greatest players list could likely consist of guys from the last 20 years, then too bad, so sad.
