RE: HW Korcek: 50 Greats at HS. (And he shoots a bottle rocket at The DogPound)
To RitzHuskie, StayCool, Lord Stanley, DogPoundNorth, StevenNIU, RedanBlackAttack
And especially to Who You Crappin’? --- poor babies, got your feelings hurt by that mean old Korcek. Gawd are you guys overly sensitive and taking things too personally.

Where exactly is the big slam? Korcek’s mistake was thinking that the oldest living Bear being a Huskie was a surprise to so many on this board because it generated so little reaction in comparison to a freshman transfer who never played a down. And that gets everyone’s nose out of joint?
Ask a co-worker, friend or other family member to read it as a column written about one of the original Hall of Fame inductees and did they learn any of the following --- Where’d he come from (Foley, MN), who was he (WW II vet), what he’d do (three-time all-conference end played in two bowl games, first Huskie drafted, first NFL champion, first NFL Pro Bowl selection, etc.).
Did any of you read far enough to learn which Huskies have played in the most NFL games? Would you have guessed Hollis Thomas ahead of Ryan Diem? Would you think Tim Tyrrell made the top 10? That’s a waste of space MaddDawgz02?
Where else but in Korcek’s column would you learn that Brink has been in touch with Carey and is donating his autographed 1951 NFL title football and championship ring to his alma mater? Bet Brink could have made more than a few dollars if he chose to contact some sports memorabilia collector. No he cares enough about NIU to donate those items and it’s going to be on display in the Hall of Champions – How do we now know this? Because Brink respects Korcek enough to share that information with him.
Via his DC columns Korcek continues to promote NIU athletics and its history and he’s doing so for free.
Not one person thought there was a compliment when Korcek said he checks the forum “on a regular basis for news, rumors, varied opinions”? Seriously. Yes, he added “shear amusement,” but that could only be an insult since no one goes off on tangents about hot dogs, the Grotto, passing gas, drinking, etc.
When he agrees with Rick Armstrong’s view that NIU football is in its Golden Age, how does that translate to BarsemaBone2’s assumption “he’s mad at the observation half of the 60 greatest…likely consist of players from last 20 years”?
In your four years niu79 you must never have attend a Hall of Fame Induction banquet and seen a Nangle/Korcek-produced program that detailed Brinks’ accomplishments, or read the copy they wrote that was on his plaque in the Evans Field House Hall of Fame room, or read the Hall of Fame display in the Convo Center that Korcek produced.
Hey StevenNIU, why don’t you mention the name of the person you thought belonged in the same club as T.J. Lux? Afraid to have somebody on this board disagree with you? Don’t worry, clever screen names keep everyone from knowing who any one is so it’s not like someone in the public is going to put you down the way it happens to Korcek.
Assign blame to Korcek that people failed to read press releases, stories in game programs, etc., but even HuskieJohn could be a student from 99-05 and not “know who Leshon (sic) Johnson was.” Guess until you stepped foot on campus, there was no Sports Illustrated feature, USA Today sports section cover story, or knowledgeable sports writers who could make LeShon a First-Team All-America pick despite NIU having losing team records.
In another thread, golf4501 notes “The Sporting News named (Stacey Robinson) the greatest wishbone QB of all time!” Wonder who promoted him?
NIU007 says the message board “is a place where people can go to discuss or get information 24/7,” that is unless you’re Mike Korcek. Even if he isn’t a poster despite what Dog Fan and Enaiu believe, nor someone who posts links to his columns (Did thxjoenovak start this thread because he’s a member of the DC purposely putting the link on here to generate interest in HuskieWire?).
While RitzHuskie has long maintained he doesn’t bother to read Korcek’s stuff, a comment from him was inevitable and he and NIU007 can think it’s jealousy, they can take things personally, but it’s okay in another thread that someone like WhoYouCrappin’? can call Korcek a douche bag even though the photo under that screen name better resembles the term.
Honestly, it’s pretty simple: you don’t like, respect or care for Korcek’s opinions? That’s fine and your right, but when someone posts a link to his columns, exit the thread, don’t click the link. However, as niufan99 addressed the other option: “keep reading his articles and you might learn something.”
Guess what, the jokes on you too sensitive types because as a result of Korcek’s column, a Larry Brink thread generated more than one response and there’s certainly a lot more awareness about Brink than he’s just the oldest living Bear. Who’s laughing now?

My only issue with what Korcek wrote is that it comes off as fan elitist. For a fan base that struggles at times to generate a large following, its not wise practice to mock those that may not know who was running back for NIU in the 1940s or 1950s, its certainly not a sin and does not make the current day fan any less of a fan. Kind of brings back shades of the angry fans in 2003 that were upset that had to wait longer for the bathroom and concessions, and had a more difficult time parking. The inconvenience of having many fans is also trumped by a more inclusive attitude and more numerous fans

The inconvenience of having many fans is always trumped by a more inclusive attitude and more numerous fans. In this day and age of realignment and questions about future conference affiliation, playing the almighty fan card is probably not the best moves to build a fan base. There is probably no one who knows more about NIU athletics than Korcek, or anyone who loves NIU more than him, but when you have to write an article to kind of hammer home that point, it kind of is a turn-off to many, especially the younger fans.

RE: HW Korcek: 50 Greats at HS. (And he shoots a bottle rocket at The DogPound)
Mike Korcek is a friend, an incredible Huskie, and knows more about Huskie History then all of us combined. It's fine that we don't have to all agree, but to call Krocek names is total BS. Mike has given his life to NIU and that will continue. I see Mike’s article written with passion, and that it was hard to believe (me for one) now knowing the oldest Bear alive was a Huskie. I believe he wishes all of us knew more about our program, it is littered with great history. I for one don’t know enough, was only lucky enough to get to attend NIU and be a Huskie. I know Mike likes our board, and he knows we are the most passionate fans at NIU. Seems feathers got ruffled for no major reason. Let’s move on, discuss more urgent matters like hot dogs, paint on the field, and uniform combo’s. We all should be proud of our dedication to NIU, I know for one I could step it up a notch. Mike is a true Huskie.

I know my feathers aren't ruffled as I don't care enough to worry about it. Like I said, most of the stuff from Korcek I agree with. He just shouldn't expect this board to approximate the Copenhagen Convention on quantum physics. There's even a thread on this board about Huskie history. I bought the NIU book written by Verdun. I have some interest in the history, but I'm living for today.

And yes, I would have guessed Hollis Thomas played in more games, though I woudn't have been sure. I watched him at NIU and followed him some when he was in Philly.

What is funny is Mike Korcek did basically this same article in 2009.

http://www.daily-chronicle.com/2009/03/1...k/aosp69u/

That was before my born again Huskie fandom so I didn't remember it.

At least in the '09 article he admits how cranky he is. Now he's in a downright foul mood lol.

Honestly, I can't stand how condescending this reads!

You always take what I say, and twist it. What is your deal? All I did was make a speculation. IF he is going to throw any sort of comments at US for not posting, then why isn't he? If he IS OldTimeNIU, and DID create the original thread, then I take back what I said. If someone wants to specifically target US, the Dog Pound, then we have every right to specifically target and comment back on what he says of us. That is all. Every time you post, yyou like to act like your the only voice of reason on this board. Get off your high horse, and stop talking with condescension. We are all NIU fans, and just because we don't make a 40 commented thread out of a Brink post, it doesn't mean we don't have respect for the past.

And who's laughing now? Have you taken the chance to actually read the thread now? The thing was made into a joke.

Wow that's cool.

Good post MileHigh. 04-cheers
