And UAb is no SMU. I don't envy what UAb is going through, I just the fans turn out once they retake the field.

To be fair, C-USA is not the South West Conference either.

We enacted onerous academic restrictions on recruits after the DP that UAB won't suffer from

I wonder if the NCAA will allow players to transfer to UAB without penalty? I doubt they let SMU do it since their shutdown was due to NCAA violations, plus they decided to not play the second death penalty year themselves.

I wouldn't think so because that could effect other schools negatively.

I agree. They might allow UAB to sign more than 25, though.

I was at A&M at that time and I really felt for SMU when they came to College Station. They played hard but it wasn't a fair match.

I still wonder how long C-USA will continue to operate under the speculation of UAB having football. Adds a lot of uncertainty to that conference.
Unless/until UAB gets some legit facilities (OCS, IPF, etc.), its longterm future in FBS-level football will always have a question mark hovering above it. Not to mention the transparent hostility of some of the UABOT's who have authority over Blazer athletics but whose loyalty lies elsewhere.

But at least for now (say, next 10-12 years) I don't see any realistic path for UAB to abandon football again. The 6 months between Watts' two announcements was an unmitigated disaster not just for Blazer football but for Watts and for UAB as an institution. I don't think anyone will have the appetite to do a re-run anytime soon.

Also, I still it is ridiculous that they will be dormant for 2 years and return full FBS, first game in. Not sure how they expect to be competitive with no game experience.

Being competitive isn't a pre-req for playing FBS.

If it were, some programs would be in trouble.

It is if you are trying to fully fund a football program on donations... Won't have may donating for very long with a few 1-11,2-10 type seasons.

I wish them the best of luck in whatever they try to do, but my honest advice would be to play as many FCS opponents as possible the first year. If that means 8 C-USA games and 4 FCS/OOC games, then that's what I'd do.

This.

They NEED to play some kind of schedule in 2016, be it JuCo's, prep teams, something. They're going to be slaughtered in 2017 but they should at least be ready.

Extremely unlikely but they aren't playing until 2017. Why would they need free transfers. Player doesn't like his situation in 2015, can enroll at UAB in 2016 and start playing in 2017.

RE: UAb update, cause what else we gonna talk about
Am I correct in my understanding that

1) UAB will not field a team in 2015 OR 2016 in any classification
2) UAB will field a team as fully eligible FBS team in 2017

-----

If that's the case, does that mean that players transferring to UAB between 2016 and 2017 will have to sit out a year?

UAB will not field a team in 2015.

Jury is out as to whether UAB will play a non-NCAA slate in 2016.

Clark didn't mention potential scrimmages in 2016. Could those be against non-NCAA teams? I just assumed they would be intrasquad matches.

I think you can play a non-NCAA slate based on some of the comments in the release and stories.

USM beat writer says a player has petitioned the NCAA and is being allowed to transfer back to UAB. Personally I don't know why he'd want to sit out for 2 years.
