RE: When did your family immigrate to America?
In 1845 my paternal great great great grandfather left from the Detmold region (Regierungsbezirk) of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and arrived to New York City. Next, he traveled over water to New Orleans before taking a paddle wheeler up the Mississippi to St. Louis. He settled on some land along the Missouri River outside St. Charles, MO alternating between farming, and cabinet making.

The maternal side of the family is your traditional English / Irish / Scottish mutts from the mid-1800.

Our (very unique) family name has strong roots in the St. Louis area and oddly enough, Dickinson North Dakota.

My fathers side sometime around 1800. We know very little about them other than they settled in SW Va.....My mothers side around 1750. We know almost everything about the McKay clan. The most notable was James Iver McKay. He is searchable on the web.

Interesting. Are you ethnic Catholic or convert? Did they escape religious persecution?

I've been to Dickinson ND while working at the National Park in Medora ND. Dickinson is where we would get our supplies. Very peaceful and kind Americans in that part of the country!

Cradle/ethnic Catholic, and yes.

I have a very uncommon last name (we are all related) and found out recently (through relatively simple research) that some of my distant relatives who stayed in the motherland eventually ended up dying in concentration camps in the 30's and 40's.

RE: When did your family immigrate to America?
Dad's side - emigrated from Wales to Connecticut about 1715.

Mom's side - emigrated from England to Massachusetts about 1630-1635 ish. Interestingly, his brother 1st came over on the Mayflower. This direct descendant was a younger brother.

Cool family side note - look up "John Gray revolutionary war veteran". Last verifiable living Revolutionary War Veteran and was born at Mount Vernon - yes, that Mount Vernon.

Wow. Most people don't even know that the Nazis exterminated Catholics.

The Nazis also tried to exterminate the Romas (gypsies) as well as anyone else they found to be deviant: handicapped, gay, etc.

Hard to go back much more than that. I was able to get back to the mid 1500's, but all it said was my last name, no first names or anything. The trail died there. That was in Gloucestershire, England.

Not really surprised though, people back then were just trying not to die, not keep accurate records of their family history.

Yup. The testament of St. Maxmillian Kolbe is one of my favorite. Truly amazing.

RE: When did your family immigrate to America?
The family story (we haven't traced it back that far) is that we are direct descendants of Balboa's sister (the one who discovered the Pacific). He ended up getting on the wrong side of authorities and got beheaded. We are also distantly related in another branch to the Stuarts of England. Charles I got beheaded as well. Our famous branches didn't end too well. Maybe that's why most of my ancestors kept their heads down and on and were poor dirt farmers!
