There are MANY AAC schools which would flourish if they had P5 money and prestige, and Houston is certainly one of them, since they already proved themselves in the SWC. The question is how much state political pressure will be brought to bear on UT to approve them. I doubt that UT's coaches want UH recruiting in-state with the P5 label.

UT is not concerned about UH recruiting. Baylor, TCU and Tech might be. Texas competes with OU, A&M and an occasional out of state power like Notre Dame, Alabama, LSU or UCLA in recruiting. They rarely lose players they want to other schools unless there is some family tie.

Agree. UT is UT. UT is going to get thiers whether we are P5 or not. I think another part of the puzzle may be A&M. A&M and the SEC now dominates this part of the state. If Houston gets into a P5 other than the Big-12---its very likely the B12 becomes 3rd banana in SE Texas (unless Texas is doing great). It may be the B-12 wants to play a little defense in one of their prime recruiting areas.

That used to be the case, but TCU and Baylor are regularly taking recruits that Texas, A&M and OU are wanting.

True---but that is much easier when UT is down. Once they bounce back that will not happen nearly as much. Like I said, UT is UT.

Why is UT down? Because Baylor and TCU are doing better. Better options in Texas are making it difficult for traditional programs like Texas and OU to field the teams they used to. There is also the SEC teams now having access taking a few recruits here and there. On top of that, Baylor and TCU are doing better with what many consider to be lesser talented players. Texas might still get most of the players they want but it still isn't enough.

I love how everyone assumes Texas is the only obstacle in the way of expansion. And now you've got it into your heads that it's because Texas is down. Why are they down? Because they kept a likeable coach around too long. It wasn't all that long ago that Alabama was down. But Nick Saban changed that. I find it amusing that everyone thinks Texas can't do the same.

Texas is NOT against expansion, if the RIGHT schools present themselves. But there are currently no right schools. So there will be no expansion.

THAT IS ALL.

And Houston is beginning to. Three commits this year (out of 12) were offered by UT.

I don't think raw talent is their issue. That's simply not why Texas is down. Their recruiting class in 2015 was #12 in the nation. In 2014 it was #20 in the nation. In 2013 it was #24. In 2012 it was #2 in the nation.

They are getting top talent. Now, you can say maybe they are picking the wrong TOP talent to go after. You can say they are using that top ranked talent poorly. You can say they are not developing the talent once it hits campus. But you cant say they are not getting the talent they are going after. In two of those years Texas had the highest ranked Big-12 class. The other 2 years, they finished second only to Oklahoma. Neither TCU or Baylor is out recruiting Texas. The Texas talent is just not showing up on the field....which is why Mack is gone. Strangely, this highly ranked talent is not really showing up on the field for Oklahoma either.

Right. And those down years (20+) in ranking were 1) because they only had 15 scholarships one year; and then 2) because they switched coaches late and lost several top players who had previously committed.

All this crap is because it's the dead season, and there's nothing to talk about. But there are a ton of people interested in the Big XII expanding, since there are no end of schools who see this chance as their ticket to the big leagues, whether they're worthy or not. So the reporters jump on the story, and all the wannabees eat it up.

But it's just to get hits to the story, not because of any real news on the matter. One minor quote and it's Katy bar the gates, the Big XII land rush has begun. This whole affair has been downright hilarious, watching everyone react.

Well at least this has some basis behind it, OU president stated something that shook the realignment world. Now I know that doesn't fit the Big 12 is awesome and totally stable line, but it did happen. With the disclosure of the lies that have come from Bowlsby about the contract it adds to the intrigue of why.

None of that was news to the players in the game. It simply wasn't advertised, probably out of embarrassment.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Big 12 purposely leaked some pro expansion news every off season because of all the positive press they gey out of it. Everyone knows expansion news generates web hits.

I don't see any reason for the Big 12 to expand especially with CCG deregulation on the horizon.

Deregulation shouldn't be on the horizon, it should be here. It has been continuously pushed back. The amount of time between moments of "talking about it" is a joke. They talk about it all the time. They are simply making a big show about how unattainable deregulation is with the current state of things.

Plus when the Deregulation first came out, the playoff committee said that nothing will change and a CCG will still be figured in. The thing is that it may not pass to allow Big 12 to have one with only 10 schools.

I like how many here are riding Boren's jock about his expansion comments but ignore that he also said expansion was something that should happen long term and not short term.

I have to chuckle at the Big XII fans...particularly the WVU fans...who keep insisting that "the right two teams" include Nebraska, VaTech, Clemson, Florida State, or any other school already in a Power Conference. None of those schools are available and they either 1) already left the B12 or 2) opted to stay in their home conferences when the B12 was looking to expand the last time.

I think personally some sort of calculation ought to be made about what makes a program the "right" program is whether or not they are actually realistically available.

University of Cincinnati
Cincinnati may make more sense for the Big 12 than any other school on this list. The Bearcats have almost everything in place from strong athletics, facilities, academics, and a large television market, to make a seamless transition into a Power 5 conference. On top of that, their Athletic Director, Mike Bohn, has ties to the Big 12 dating back to his time at the University of Colorado, and he also happens to know a thing or two about conference realignment. There is also the very real possibility that if things go well for Cincinnati over the next couple of years that more than one Power 5 conference could come calling.

This is the part I like the most. I don't really want any part of the B12 for multiple reasons if we can get another power conference to take us.
