The WAC would like to officially welcome The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley! Follow the Vaqueros at @goUTRGV

Well, sort of. It's really just UT-Pan American with a new name.

Fooled me for sec as I was thinking of the abbreviation. UT-RGV is going to be a quite a nice university and a great add for the WAC. Their med school just started their first class of residents.

Its nice that they didn't do that stupid name they first proposed. It was going to be a long Spanish name that really kind of copied the idea of Texas A&M International (Laredo). De las Americas was going to be part of the name.

There's still a name controversy. A lot of the students/alums hate the name Vaqueros.

Hmmm. Vaquero is a really top notch single action revolver. I like it.

I kinda liked the idea of Texas-Las Americas. But Rio Grande Valley works also.
And I like the Vaquero name

I actually like the Vaquero name, too, although I admit I had to look it up to know it means. But it stirred up a big sh*t-storm when they announced it last year. I guess its blown over by now.

The WAC gave UTSA a home when no one else would. Go WAC! Go Vaqueros!

RE: WAC adds Texas-Rio Grande
The WAC is remaking itself into a decent hoops conference

Chicago State is in the middle of a hotbed of talent
Grand Canyon draws very well attendance wise averaging 4373 for 12 home games last season. Adding their attendance would raise the conference per game average by over 200.
WAC is one of the few non power conferences with 2 programs that have made a Final 4 (NM ST & Seattle)

It's UT-Brownsville and Pan American with a new name. I met an alum from UTB just on Tuesday.

The WAC was 31st out of 33 conferences in RPI. Long ways to go to become a decent hoops conference - that is of course, assuming it can remain viable and nobody else leaves.

Hey now, Seattle's been to a national championship game and produced an NBA Hall of Famer. How many schools in any of the 18 conferences ahead of the WAC can say that?

If you want to be technical C2, UC Davis has a national championship and UC Riverside has a national runner-up to their credit. Granted it was in division 2 but it counts all the same

Umm, no they don't. Seattle's appearance means more since it was D-1.

Anyways, it wasn't meant to be taken all that seriously.

You're being kind--the WAC is still the island of Division I's misfit toys. It seems that every wandering program short of NJIT is there.
