Navy independent since 1879
Welcome aboard!

...Navy has played as an independent since the football program began in 1879 and the American Athletic Conference will be Navy’s first conference affiliation. The Academy is one of only four schools that has produced a U.S. president (Jimmy Carter) and a Super Bowl-winning quarterback (Roger Staubach). Navy’s football history includes two Heisman Trophy winners – Staubach and Joe Bellino – 23 consensus All-America selections and one national championship team (in 1926)...

...“I am proud and delighted to take this opportunity to welcome the United States Naval Academy into the American Athletic Conference as a football-playing member,” said American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco. “We extend a warm welcome to Admiral Ted Carter, Superintendent of the Naval Academy, athletic director Chet Gladchuk, head football coach Ken Niumatalolo...

...“We are very excited about joining the American Athletic Conference and playing in the West Division,” said Navy director of athletics Chet Gladchuk. “The programs at Houston, Memphis, SMU, Tulane and Tulsa are run in a very similar manner as ours and we feel that we can be competitive in that division and compete for a championship....

...“Joining the American Athletic Conference has given us another goal,” said Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo. “Now, not only do we have the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy to play for, but a conference championship as well. I do know there are very good football teams in this league and it’s going to be a huge challenge for our program. Every week we will have a tough opponent to play.”

I was advocating Navy for C-USA 15 years ago (despite heavy disagreement) on our message boards. They will be a valuable member of AAC football in several ways, bringing respect, national appeal and competitiveness.

RE: Navy independent since 1879
Like some have mentioned, I am very concerned about the Navy option offense. It is run very much like that of GT whose coach was at Navy prior. GT with normally inferior talent (comparatively speaking) consistently confounds its ACC opponents (& UGA too) with its option offense that is so different than most every other program faced. Give GT or Navy a lead and they are very difficult to beat.

But in the spirit of the announcement, welcome to Navy.

I don't give a rat's a$$ what you bring up - I would take Army back in a minute - same goes for Air Force. Competitiveness is important, but there are other considerations which are equally if not more important. Naturally, airheads cannot be expected to understand such things.

Who would the other three schools be with a president and a super bowl winner as QB?

Michigan (Ford and Brady)
Stanford (Hoover and Elway)
Miami University of Ohio (Benjamin Harrison and Rothlesberger)

Remember the Army game right after 911, when that helicopter took off from the north side of the stadium? I was already jumpy after seeing security on top of the suites on the East side of the stadium.

The Ivy League will never expand, but I always thought Army and Navy would fit in well in the Ivy.

If we're still pretending that college athletics is about integrity, then having one of the military academies in our conference is a tremendous privilege.

Too bad it's really a duplicitous enterprise where universities actively promote money laundering by boosters (see Alabama and Albert Means for an idea of how much money is really being passed around), commit academic fraud while pretending that the players are student athletes, and then punish those very athletes with probation when the coaches, boosters, and athletic directors are caught breaking laws that would send bankers to jail.

And then there are universities where our best and brightest do join the football team to represent the academy, before going off to represent America on the battlefield.

Ok, I'll get off my high horse now.
