RE: Hamrick disappointed with fans over App State scheduling...
Reading from some Marshall posters on here, you would think Marshall will be in the SEC soon and are too good to play anyone but P5 teams home and away, so I can certainly see Marshall fans thinking they are too good to play at App. St.....

I am going to state why I perceive this is happening. When Hamrick first took the position, he said he heard from fans that they wished there was more local teams like Ohio, Miami, and Louisville on he schedule. So he went out and got them, got Pitt, got NcState, and a few other MAC schools. So, he applied similar logic to Appy State, thinking here's a team with history, not terrible travel, and the fans will generally like it... So he probably expect a similar reaction to when he announced the Miami of Ohio series...

... except Marshall fans quit reminiscing about the SoCon days long ago. It actually feels like a step back to a page we walked away from. Appy fans started throwing out trash talk from 20 years, and it just doesn't have meaning today and is a history that most are not exactly excited to revisit.

No there was a tweet from MU athletics with his named attached to it that sent it out. The writer knew about it and picked it up shortly afterward. Ask Woody about it. The tweet from MU got the hype rolling. Sorry, MU is not perfect. They screwed this one up. Truth.

If I were a Marshall fan, I wouldn't be interested in this game either. If Marshall wants to go to an access bowl, this does not help. In general, I'm not all that thrilled with any CUSA school playing Sunbelt schools, ODU included.

RE: Hamrick disappointed with fans over App State scheduling...
Not a single one of us has a crystal ball and knows where each program will be in 2021. To say that we are too good to be playing App in 2021 is beyond ludicrous. I'm sure when New Hampshire was scheduled in or around 1999 that we didn't think that it would be a game....and they beat our ass.

However, for these App fans to come on here and start trash talking about how they're going to beat us or pointing out that they lead the series blah blah blah...is just as asinine.

This is a good series to get...period. It is certainly better that Kent, Miami, etc (AT PRESENT). I would at least rather to schedule a team (especially that far out) that is trending up than down, and App is definitely trending up.

As long as we have one P5 in the mix each year, I'd be happy...and I feel that should be the minimum standard...

The SBC will have solid schools and terrible schools in any given season, just like CUSA or any other conference. If you can snag a win against one of the top teams, that isn't a bad thing.

Marshall is never going to be able to fill up an OOC schedule with P5 opponents because they don't really offer much incentive for schools to play them at home. They're not in a good recruiting area and they have a great home record. I wouldn't want to play there for those two reasons alone.

If you can't get a P5 team at home for both your OOC games, you might as well get a team that may draw some local interest and bring fans.

You see a pending big announcement, get excited, and the hype starts to build up. This is a team that has been posting pretty good records yet hasn't been acknowledged because the schedule hasn't exactly been up to par. I can't blame folks for expecting to see a team from a stronger conference come to town and add some legitimacy to a football team that has been knocked for a soft schedule. Those folks are hungry for a B1G team or the like to come in so they can really see where there program is right now. That's something we all want, really.

That said, Appalachian State is going to get back on track. Anyone haughty enough to look down on them should do so at their own risk.

Easy now. I respect Appy. We could easily lose to Appy. A few idiots on social media don't speak for all Herd fans. Really happy with the series, but one year of Sun Belt play and a history against the Herd doesn't mean Appy just jumped over Marshall's last 17 years of D1 play.

Come back when Appy gets ranked or actually plays in a bowl game or wins a D1 conference.

Marshall has won 6 conference titles, played in 8 conference title games, gone 9-2 in bowls, finished the year ranked 3 times in the AP poll, and 4 times in the coaches, probably quadrupled its football budget, built a 30+ million dollar football/academic/medical/training center, had a player win the Belitnikoff award, had two players invited to NYC for the Heisman ceremony, beaten Clemson, and beaten a ranked K-State among many other things in our 17 years of (current) D1 play.

Who needs a reality check?

Appy state isn't gonna draw local interest, or an increased number of fans.

Call it what you will, but app state is not an impressive school to be playing, based on where both programs are right now. Appy state is to us, what we are to virginia tech. Fills a gap on the schedule with a winnable game, but doesn't get anybody excited on the Va Tech end.

This will settle itself in 6 years and I'm not holding my breath.

Not true at all. All of us aspire for our team to take the next step st aome point, but Snyder put us in a position that we need several more seasons like the last 2, to garner legitimacy again. Several teams in cusa can and will beat us in the years to come. Its just most of us were expecting a nice p5 or bigger g5 game, and scheduled a team from a glorified FCS conference.

And i also believe that Marshall is no the favorite this year, WKU is, unless that defense hasn't improved.

Exactly, playing programs in the top half of any G5 conference are good series for G5 programs. Hopefully App will be in the top two or three programs in whatever conference they are in at that time.

this was my take on the 'reality check' statement. appy state just made the move you guys made a long time ago. if their history is an indicator they will eventually be successful. but that poster came across as they had already surpassed (imo) what marshall has been doing for a long time. or maybe equating 'the win' with sustained success AT THE FBS LEVEL....not toy bowl football.

thanks for your post.

Judging by recent history, Appy State is probably the best non-conference opponent on Marshall's slate by far.

Don't know but whenever CUSA ADs see the 912 area code on the phone, they reject the call.05-stirthepot

Ironically in east Georgia, north of Savannah. You guys, don't let this troll's comment create 5 more pages of "everyone from Ga Southern are tasteless". Yes he's an ass for saying it, but we aren't all trashy like that.

FIU's comment was in reference to a different Ga So troll.
