Maryland is the southern most school in the B10. That alone brings advantages - they can sell the best winter weather in the B10. MD has always supported it's non-revenue sports even when they had no money to do so - that very commandment from the President is some part of what drove MD to seek cash from the B10 (combined with the professional competition in Baltimore and DC).

IIRC, in the B10, only Ohio State, Michigan, NW, and Indiana attempt almost all sports and attempt to actually compete in almost all the sports. In the ACC of old, only UNC, UVa, Duke, and MD attempted that.

As far as the revenue sports go, ACC football is underrated. And as far as basketball goes, MD has had either national champion or top 5 quality teams in the 70's, 80's, and 00's.
