RE: Akron Attendance Woes
I like to wear K College gear. When my daughter was at a camp at Spring Arbor I bought some of their stuff. Did a conference at the University of Chicago and bought some of their Ts. If I get to Boston I'd love to get some Harvard,Yale, and MIT stuff. I like the nerd school stuff.

Unless you have a true connection to a school then P5 gear simply means you're s conformist

Quote:Faculty Senate chair recommends University of Akron drop level in football

Quote:UA competes in the Mid-American Conference, which includes six Ohio public universities: Bowling Green, Kent State, Miami, Ohio, Toledo and UA. The MAC requires schools to participate in football, so UA would need to find a new conference if it decided to leave the FBS level. The majority of faculty would support such a move, she said. But she added that the UA board of trustees “aren’t quite ready to pull the trigger.”

Quote:“Especially after spending $65 million on a stadium, it’s always hard to say, ‘We were really stupid,’ and yet that’s sometimes what a person has to do,” she said

I wonder if this might be a trend for G5 schools?

Interesting since WMU is going in a completely opposite direction and beefing up its commitment to football. Of Course WMU didn't just build a new stadium that it cant fill and is fortunate to have many friends of the University willing to bankroll the extras needed to move the program up a few notches. We have the bells and whistles just need a MAC championship to go with it!!!

RE: Akron Attendance Woes
Akron has a really Nice stadium. They poured a lot of $$ into their football program + getting Bowden. I wouldn't ditch it yet. Too soon after that sweet stadium. I would invest some money in advertising and bringing people in to watch, so if Bowden becomes a good coach with it -- look out.

I know Akron's old stadium was out in BFE away from campus. The rubber bowl if I remember the name correctly. So I can understand getting a new one.

Personally? I would have maybe spruced it up low-cost and not built a new stadium... and instead put what would have been millions and millions into that -- into getting a sweet f'ing coaching staff, and ads & free shuttles & virtually-free tickets getting everything going FIRST.

Don't kid yourself. There is a lot of similar sentiment among academicians on our campus, especially with all the money sunk into football last two-plus years.

If attendance continues to drop and-or team struggles on the field, their voices may grow louder.

The Rubber Bowl, without question, was by far the biggest dump of a stadium I've ever been in my life. I don't know any specifics when it comes to costs, but I have to imagine that it would have probably cost almost as much (if not more) to gut and renovate that stadium as it did to build the new stadium. And, as you correctly pointed out, the Rubber Bowl was about a half hour from campus.

Academicians have nothing to complain about as of late. Looks like plenty of money has been across the board in all aspects of campus life. All I know is I want to be a student again. Campus looks amazing

Major ...agree but I recall the academicians complaining about WMU athletic budgets in the early seventies. It will always be that way....however it may be more acute today given far less money is appropriated to the University from the State and costs have shifted to students to fund their education IE more student loans. Dollars and how they are spent are on everyone's radar.

... and the chicks stay the same age. Yes they do. :)

But college costs are a huge problem. As one big study recently showed, they're hiring WAY more people within administration to cover the same tasks. They're pouring way too much money to expand to get more money in, etc. Bad idea over time. They're (almost) all trying to be bigger, better, more attractive places which is driving up prices where people can't afford it. It's a bubble waiting to be burst.

Quote:The Rubber Bowl, without question, was by far the biggest dump of a stadium I've ever been in my life.

I went there one Halloween weekend. It was pretty desolate. A couple in front of me sneered at me for heckling Akron early on. However, after getting back to Kzoo, I porked a gal in an angel costume at a party later that night, so it was all good. But more importantly, it was a Bronco road win.

Quote: I don't know any specifics when it comes to costs, but I have to imagine that it would have probably cost almost as much (if not more) to gut and renovate that stadium as it did to build the new stadium.

Oh, I wouldn't have done a complete renovation. I would have spruced up the place a bit, but that's it. Setting up nice tailgating situation outside of the stadium, free shuttles, virtually free tickets, tons of Ads supporting the 'Roo and advertising BYOB on the shuttle for tailgating... the whole nine yards. Way less money spent and less risk than building a whole new freaking stadium (or massive renovation). Then I'd take all those millions I would spend on a new stadium and have a big coaching budget to make the team WIN (which would help bring IN those fans along with the free beer, tickets, etc).

Academics have little to complain about, however, students and taxpayers do. Here is an interesting take from George Will:

Academia is loaded with nerd patrollers who think frisbie golf is a sport and that all athletes are pampered idiots. They just think they're entitled to A bigger slice of the money pie. It will NEVER happen here, at Akron, or at EMU for that matter. College football is too much a part of the college culture

I'm not implying we will ever drop to FCS/D-IAA (again).

Just that there could be more public dissent from faculty if we don't get results on the field and in the stands for financial commitment to football.
