Horrible race strategy by Bates and her coach to make that move with 1600 to go (4 laps). No way could a 66 (or even the 68 which she meant to run) do anything but kill her for the last 3 laps. Some may call it gutsy but that is the equivalent of running about a 4:24 mile for a lap 5 1/4 miles into the race. She can't do that and paid for it. 2 laps later it may have worked as you only have 1 lap to go and she needed to take Scott's kick away from her but 4 laps early is way too much. That said, good for her in not making excuses and saying she went for it. May have been a bad strategy but she owned it.

Emily was definitely well spoken and at first I was hoping she could catch Seidel and then hold off Scott but Scott's kick is better than any other collegiate distance runner and Seidel was flat out great the last 1600 of that race. Definitely a great season after the frustrating injury last fall.
