Grizz pick coming up
In hindsight thank goodness we passed on Hunter. Dude shot 30% from 3 at the college level against Sun Belt competition. It appears after RHJ, everyone else drafted is a shot in the dark. Let's hope we keep Martin around and develop him.

A couple of sites graded the Griz pick as a C-. Probably not what you'd want from a team trying to get over the hump.

I like Martin, but I don't see him as anything more than a spot contributor for the near future. JMO.

We can get a shooter through free agency. The only decent shooter that was left the was Hunter, and he dropped to 28.

Not that song again. When has that been successful for the Grizz?

He'll be a solid backup 4 and we don't have anyone right now. It'll be between him and Jam Green for next season. Good solid pick.

Time will tell but, at this time, I couldn't disagree more. It's just a horrible pick if they keep him.

With the shorter college 3pt line Hunter shot 30.5% from 3 last year. That was 2nd to last on his team. Even Tony Allen shot better than that.
Ehh...we shall see. If Hunter was that great, Spurs wouldn't have passed him over either. Late first round picks rarely turn out to be all stars...if he can become a solid bench player and eventually a starter when Zbo retires, then it would work out very well.

Total crapshoot. But I'm shocked they didn't take that chance with a shooter, like Hunter, for example.
I'd bet they trade the guy.

It just goes to show that hitting a few big shots can totally change the outlook on a player. Forget, the regular season, I remember hitting shots and his dad falling off his chair.

Martin is an okay pick at the 25 spot. "Shooters" rarely come in and contribute immediately, see guys like Doug McDermot, Jordan Adams, etc. It even took JJ Redick a few years to really start contributing. If a team needs a shooter immediately then they have a better shot of trying to find a decent shooting free agent than drafting one game ready...

Let's be fair on RJ Hunter...for his career (three seasons), he shot 50% from FG, 35% from 3PT and 85% from FT.

Here are all his stats for folks that want to compare with Martin.

Which is kind of the point - if you're rolling the dice, why not roll it on a gunner who may or may not pan out as a high level shooter in the NBA in a few years?

But, it's their pick. They live with it.

Demare Carroll, Grevis Vasquez, Tony Wroten, & Darrell Arthur were all late round Wallace picks and they are all legitimate NBA players.

So Wallace's late first round track record ain't too shabby.

Finally a sane post in this thread!

Against low-major competition, dude was a below average shooter.

He hits a couple of shots in the NCAA tourney and his dad rolls around on the floor, and he's the next Reggie Miller?

Hunter has D-League role player written all over him...

Against that level of competition, yes.

He's a D-League/overseas guy. And, nothing wrong with that! He'll make a nice living for many years, playing basketball! I wish I had that ability.

My only point was, passing on him is not something to get upset about. That's all.

I'm not upset, just don't see the rationale or logic.

I've seen nothing in Martin that tells me he is a star or any different than Stokes/Jeff Green type.

I'd rather roll the long-term dice on developing a guy who likes to shoot.

Either way - whoever they drafted was looking at logging major minutes with the Iowa Energy, so it doesn't really matter - just found their decision odd.

Majority of the sites grade the draft as a B for the Grizz. We did ok.

I guess I don't? Just my take on the situation.

Late first rounders aren't immediate impact guys because they are going on teams that don't need immediate impact through the draft.

History? If he was a player that was an immediate game changer he would have been a top 5 pick. Even late lottery guys aren't typically the kind of guys that are going to make a huge impact right away on a playoff caliber team.

Imagine a DJ Stephens who can shoot and dribble. Or a Zach Randolph that can jump and run. This is a solid defensive pick up for the grizzlies. The addition of Martin along with Barnes helps to extend our defense even more and will create the best defensive juggernaut the NBA has seen in quite some time. People keep saying that the grizzlies need shooting in order to win. Were they not watching the NBA playoffs? It is obvious that if Mike Conley is playing in game one and the rest of the series at 100% and if Tony Allen doesn't get injured we beat the warriors. See games 2 & 3. people keep saying that the grizzlies need shooting in order to win. Were they not watching the NBA playoffs? Just see games two and three. The Warriors have a once in a lifetime talent on their team. NBA teams going out and chasing that dream will fail 99 times in 100. The NBA is still a defense first league. One player is not going to change that. Most people in this thread, and the expert analysts in Memphis, haven't watched Jarrell Martin play one minute. He is a gamer. He was one of the few players in this draft that has an NBA style of play and body already.

I'm just wondering what the next move is.

Currently there is a logjam at the PF and SG spot and no back-up C.

No C at all if Marc doesn't re-sign.
