before Chris you have to consider Josh Haldi. But with a limit of 50 players, the qb position is settled at Harnish and Lynch.

This isn't a first/second team thing where each position has limited spots to fill. Its the best 50 players period. In most cases your QB should be one of your best players on the field.

That's a sign of a good thing though that has the program has developed the best players to ever play here have been on campus recently.

In addition to the five you mentioned above, I would round out the top ten with Mark Kellar, Tim Tyrell, Larry English, Jimmy Ward, and Stacey Robinson.

Mark Kellar was the best player that I had the pleasure to watch as a student. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to see so many more of his caliber since coach Novak righted the ship. Coach Pettibone had some good squads as well. Stacey Robinson was a great wishbone QB.

Some old school names that will be on the list.

Pete Roth, Dave Petzke, Tom Wittum, and the toughest DB I ever saw Mark Stuart.

Agreed.

Would not surprise me if Larry English is #2. Two-time MAC MVP, three-time 1st Team All-MAC, highest NFL pick in NIU history.

RE: NIU to name Huskie Stadium's 50 greatest players
I'm curious if PJ makes the list.

When you start to factor in lineman and also go back in time 50 is a crunch on a guy like PJ even though he was great.

Someone mentioned Hollis Thomas, you have Diem, Free, Todd Peat. Those are just the lineman at the top of my head leaving out English as he has to be a top 5 NIU player.

Then start going through receivers. Where does he fit with the old players and then factor in the competition of the more modern guys like McCarriens, Hurd (won't make the list because of jail), Moore, Brown, Sheldon.

I'm not very old so I don't know much about things past 1995 but there have been some studs in the past 20 years to make it hard for PJ to make the list.

He should be on there. Regardless of opinion about him now, P.J. was a great player. Just going by records, he's #3 in career receptions and #5 in career receiving yards, and this is without ever playing in a postseason game.

Jimmy Ward has to be in the top 10 as well. As far as PJ goes, I'd put Justin McCareins ahead of him.

I agree, but I think PJ still makes the list. 11-50 isn't ranked, it's just guys that should be there.

Ward could be top 10, but it also would not surprise me at all if English is the only defensive player in the top 10.

The # of offensive players on the list is going to outnumber the # of defensive players.

Oh this has nothing to do with opinion because he was a great Huskie, but when you start factoring in other players 50 can seem to get small very fast considering there are 22 regular starters each season and then special teams gets added.

So I think there are around 10 locks for modern day players (last 15-20 seasons) and then idk about old players. Just saying when you add lineman and stuff and you consider PJ probably top 5 receiver of the 50 years maybe top 3 (Hurd has no chance) so he could be between PJ, McCarriens, and Martel Moore to slide in the top 50. If there weren't so many positions id say he's in easy but football just has so many positions.

That's not how this list is going to be put together at all.

This is the 50 greatest players, regardless of position and as I said earlier, there will likely be more players on offense on the list than defense. That's not a knock, it's just a fact that in the course of NIU football history, there have been far more great players on offense than there have been on defense. The only special teams player who I think might appear on the list is Steve Azar.

There will likely be upwards of 5 RB/FB on the list (Kellar, Ross, Johnson, Hammock, Turner, Wolfe, Spann), and I wouldn't be surprised if there are more than 5 WRs as well (Petzke, McCareins, Fleck, Sheldon, Hurd, Moore).

And don't dismiss Hurd. Just because he's in jail, does not mean that he's not one of the 50 greatest players in Huskie Stadium history. If you're putting together a valid list, he's likely on it.

To JWN's point about how difficult this is to narrow to 50....

Last time this was done (1965-1994 30 Years) they went 3-deep at each position which gets you 70+ players.

Has TLL done enough to get on that list?

What about transfers like Bishop who was drafted?

They'll both be considered because they were 1st Team All MAC in 2013. Don't know that they'll be named, in fact I kinda doubt it, but they'll be a part of the conversation.

I wasn't saying they are doing it by position I'm just saying there are going to be players at virtually at every position and that starts making it tough for players that are not the best player ever at the position but are in the top 5.
