RE: Do sports writers ever do research?
Look at this troll who tried to get into it with me on Twitter:

Quote:@Chuges:
@Andy_Staples In the greater Cincinnati area Ohio State is NOT more popular than @GoBEARCATS football. Only Reds and Bengals outrank UC.

J.d. Wind ‏@Jdwindd:
@Chuges @Andy_Staples I get it. But to be that close minded about the amount of Ohio State fans there are here is ludicrous. There's a ton

‏@Chuges:
@Jdwindd @Andy_Staples No one denies that there are Ohio State fans in Cincinnati, but they don't outnumber Bearcats fans, no chance.

J.d. Wind ‏@Jdwindd:
@Chuges @Andy_Staples if they do it's not by much. the attendance at games doesn't really help that image.

I decided not to engage him further.

Yea, the #Bearcats/#OSU comment just begs a poll question...so I created one. Go vote. http://www.espn1530.com/onair/lance-mcal...-13710881/

RE: Do sports writers ever do research?
It's 64% UC and 31% OSU....

Why does this just keep coming up...UC beats OSU in EVERY poll in Cincy for fan following.

I wish somebody would send this link to that Staples loser.

It's clickbait. He knows we'll all go to the page as many times as possible to vote for UC. Drives web traffic which is good for the iHeartMedia machine to keep rolling.

So is his butt pal Stewie Mandel, who has high contempt for UC.

Nah. He will spin it as 63% (now 65%) is not a great enough of a percentage.

Most people in the media are there to push an agenda. And those that I've met aren't exactly lighting the world on fire with their work ethic.

RE: Do sports writers ever do research?
The Bearcats coach went on to say, "I am still going to coach the team and we are still going to compete for a Big East title. But it is sad for the fans of Cincinnati to not have a legitimate, credible local media outlet. Our fans would be better served going to Rivals, Sporting News, or even the Boston Globe because they are credible sources who care enough about their product to be here."

Local polls consistently indicate UC is top 3 overall sports teams and #1 when it comes to college teams. Talking to retailers, ie Rally House, they state UC is the #1 seller of merchandise, by a great margin. This includes their Northern KY location. UC has more alumni in the metro area than An OSU. The highest rated ESPN game in the Cincy narket was the UC / USF back in 2009. Even Urban Meyer stated to Tom Brenneman the reason OSU does not have a greater presence is due to The University of Cincinnati being located here. I believe Urban even said UC had a successful fball program. As much as the local media does a terrible job covering UC, the coverage is light years ahead of OSU coverage.

I am glad that you mentioned Rally House. Go to the Rookwood location and you will find UC and Reds apparel in the front of the store. Retailers know that Reds, Bengals, and Bearcats sell in this town. UC has a decent display of merchandise in the Dayton area too.

While Ohio State dominates Columbus, I was happy to find UC gear at places like Lids and Homage. I wouldn't shock me if the Bearcats following in Columbus or Cleveland is bigger than people give it credit. No reason why UC can't be in the mix for the second or third most popular college team in the rest of Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

While the Bengals and Reds might hurt UC in this town in terms of sports attention. I do believe they help UC if you move beyond greater Cincinnati. Getting the overall city of "Cincinnati" brand out there helps paint an image of a thriving sports city that people might want to do adopt due to a number of factors. During the Huggins years, I believe UC basketball had a "cool" factor that helped grow the brand.

Ohio State is in a long line of teams that have some level of interest in Cincinnati but are completely off the radar in terms of mainstream Cincinnati sports. Most of us know that Kentucky basketball has a bigger following in this area than Ohio State football and basketball combined.

Been saying the bolded for about five years. Using the analogy of a soft drink, UC has a different flavor than Ohio State. There are many people throughout the state who actually would like the "taste" of the UC brand more than Ohio State if they had exposure to it. We are never going to usurp Ohio State or even come close to it, but growing the brand even a little bit in the Miami Valley (Dayton) and in other pockets would do wonders.

I can speak a bit about the UC following in Columbus. I lived there from 2001-2013. From 2001-2006 UC was invisible in Columbus. I remember once wearing a UC football shirt to an office picnic and one of the ladies remarked she didn't even know UC had a football team (as a wife of a former OSU player she was pretty savvy when it came to college sports). Starting after the BK years and up until the time I left I noticed a nice uptick. I started seeing the occasional person wearing UC gear, I would see a UC license plate here and there, UC even was smart and put up some promotions at high school sporting events... quite a few people I knew sent their kids to UC (prior to that it was OSU, the MAC or small in-state private school).

Definitely a change in perception. I know when I was in high school, I wouldn't have thought of a UC shirt any differently than I would have thought of any MAC shirt (actually I wouldn't have been able to tell you UC wasn't in the MAC). Now we do see a lot more.

The BE and winning fball changed most of the perception. You now had nationally televised games from a sold out Nippert. UC's style of play won a lot of fans over. In turn this also helped introduce individuals to UC's stellar academics/research.

I am amazed at how much more popular UC has been since entering the BE. I remember individuals supporting UC during our bball success of the 90's. However, I see many more people wearing UC gear, houses with UC flags, UC swag on cars, and people wanting to talk UC with me during my trips around the country.

As to the question posed in the subject in this thread, some reporters do, some don't. Our own GameTime21 as well as Dan Hoard are great at doing their research before they write or speak something. Sadly, most reporters don't.

It is a fact of life, love it or hate it, but these days athletics plays a huge role in the public perception of a university, and it gets you exposure that you can't buy. I think that's why there's this constant arms race among schools to keep upping the ante in terms of facilities, coaches, etc...
