Very cool.

...but I'm not sure I want it named "Blaze". Komodo dragons are nasty pieces of work.

Well, we do have a "nice dragon" at the south entrance to Bartow Arena.

In my opinion, Komodo Dragons are the scariest creatures on earth. Just creepy as hell.

The Birmingham Zoo is getting a Dragon
The Bham Zoo has had a Komodo Dragon for many many years. This is a new habitat. I wish the Montgomery Zoo would grow as big as Bham's. I like the wide open enclosures of Montgomery's better than Bham's. But I like that Bham Zoo has more animals. The kid area of Bham Zoo is really nice for young kids too. My son loves both zoos.

At one time there was a design suggestion for the B'ham Zoo to add the property left by moving Shades Valley HS to Irondale in order to provide more wide open, more "natural" enclosures for its animals. I don't know the reason(s) it was not done, but I believe most of the area is still undeveloped.

They are an animal that is not afraid of anything.

Per Wikipedia:
"It has been claimed that they have a venomous bite; there are two glands in the lower jaw which secrete several toxic proteins. The biological significance of these proteins is disputed, but the glands have been shown to secrete an anticoagulant. "

I think the problem w/ their bite, is the infection that sets in rather quickly (in a few days) in an environment not conducive to healing that does an animal in & it's just biding it's time following the scent trail to an eventual dinner

Those critters are scavengers who will eat virtually anything, moving or not. Munching on rotting flesh tends to fill the mouth with lots of bad 'bugs'; which provides all the 'toxin' needed to make its bite deadly, even if it doesn't kill its prey immediately.
