Summer College Baseball Leagues
Thought I'd start a thread devoted to following Rice players in the various Summer leagues.
Salinas is off to a great start (2-0) in California, as is Ryan Chandler, and Charlie Warren is hitting very well in the historically pitcher-friendly Cape Cod League.
Does anyone know why Austin Solecitto was just released from his team in the Cape? He hadn't pitched great in 3 short-stint relief appearances.

Looks like Ryan McCarthy just transferred to play for SFA as a grad student...

He'll most likely get more than 6 innings of work in a season...

RE: Summer College Baseball Leagues
So far, Dane Myers (.357, 5 xtrabase hits, 12 RBIs, 6 SBs; 3 app, 6.0 IP, 2 hits, 0.00 ERA, 7 Ks) and true Freshman 2B (.343, 3 xtrabase hits, 12 RBIs) and Ricardo Salinas (4 starts, 3-0, 16.0 IP, 1.12 ERA, 6 hits, 8 Ks) are our standout players in the California League. Otto is also pitching well in California, while Amador (4-0, 3.22 ERA) has had just one bad outing in four starts. Chandler (.327, 14 SBs) and Brewer (.326, 8 RBIs) are both doing well in California, but striking out at high rates.
In the pitching-friendly Cape, Warren (.250) has cooled off from his hot start, but Gray is holding his own (.302, 3 doubles). Fox is doing well (2-0, .093 ERA, 9.2 IP, 7 Ks), but Duplantier has yet to see action.
Here's the unofficial cumulative Summer stats compiled by James Hajovsky...

We really need to find some offense next season. Hopefully Myers and Brewer can step up. Otherwise I fear we'll be left with a similar squad as this past season -- strong pitching but only average hitting (leaving the defense out of it, which obviously needs to make a huge improvement).

I wouldn't discount Proctor's offense and power at 2B (assuming he doesn't sign with KC as a catcher). And though Wakamatsu is struggling a bit in California this Summer (perhaps because Cleveland is still aggressively pursuing him), he's the highest rated position player prospect (Top 100 in most rankings) we've had in quite some time.

Walt, you had accidentally listed Schwarz's Ks instead of Salinas's Ks. Salinas has 20 K, 3 BB, and 6 H in 14.0 IP. Much better than 8 K in 16 IP you accidentally listed. Thanks for the update, glad to hear about the strong performances!

D1Baseball "Cape Cod Buzz" (premium content) included a brief shoutout to Tristan Gray...
http://www.d1baseball.com/the-buzz/cape-...tands-out/
Quote:• Tristan Gray (Rice) is a name to keep a very close eye on. He’s shown good range and the arm to profile at shortstop during his time with Falmouth this summer. The wiry, athletic 6-foot-3 shortstop has also shown one of the most live bats and consistent line drive swing paths of any hitter in the league thus far.

Khevin Brewer, Glenn Otto and Ricardo Salinas were just named to the CCBL All Star team.
Congrats to those named, but how did they miss Ford Proctor and Dane Myers?
Must be a glut of OFers, but how did Brewer get the nod over Myers, Procter and Chandler?

Was Brewer injured at any point early in the season? It's rare that we redshirt a highly recruited player such as him. Nice to see him doing well.

No. However, he struggled mightily in Fall Ball, and he knew it would be difficult to crack our OF with Chandler, Warren, Williamson and Taylor. Also, let's not forget that well into Spring practice, Tristan Gray was projected to start in LF. I think it was as much (if not more) his decision to red shirt than that of the coaching staff. BTW, despite his solid AVG in California, he's striking out in over 40% of his ABs. That's got to improve if he's going to start next year. Right now I'd say Dane Myers is the front runner for the LF opening.

Fixed it for you...
Seriously, still a long time before the seasons starts, but even in his infrequent ABs last year, I was impressed with Myers' plate discipline....and he appears to be continuing that trend this Summer. The question will be whether he earns a more prominent role on the pitching staff.

Last week while visiting Colorado, I learned that there are two summer leagues in or near the Rocky Mountains:
1. The Mountain West Summer Collegiate Baseball League, with teams in mountain towns like Vail, Grand Junction, Glenwood Springs, Steamboat Springs and so on:
http://www.mtwestsummercollegebaseball.com/
2. The Rocky Mountain Baseball League, with teams in Denver, Golden, Boulder, Laramie and other Front Range cities:

Good updates here
Gotta love the overall performance of our large contingent playing this summer in California....
Quote:California Collegiate League
Name (team) G Avg. Runs HR RBI SB
Khevin Brewer (Brewers) 18 .346 10 1 9 3
Ryan Chandler (Foresters) -- .329 16 0 7 15
Gavin Johnson (Capitalists) -- .211 2 0 3 1
Ford Proctor (Captialists) -- .317 14 1 13 2
Dane Myers (Pearl) 16 .346 15 2 13 7
Name (team) G W-L ERA IP SO SV
Willy Amador (Foresters) 5 4-1 2.73 26.1 18 0
Dane Myers (Pearl) 5 0-1 2.31 11.2 19 0
Glenn Otto (Foresters) 5 1-1 2.46 29.1 41 0
Ricardo Salinas (Pearl) 6 4-0 1.19 22.2 29 0
Brent Schwarz (Capitalists) 7 1-0 3.39 18.2 10 2
...hopefully, Myers and Brewer can carryover their strong performances into Fall Ball and the Spring...and what Proctor is doing as a high school Senior playing against largely college players can only whet one's appetite for his success going forward (assuming KC doesn't up their offer significantly).
