We aren't the staff is but we wont know if it was wasted until he plays and or if he produces. I dont think anyone is holding their breath over one guy. Transfers have never really been a big deal at GS. If he helps then great, if not then oh well. Recruiting is going great so I personally am not worried about 1 transfer.

I don't mind a coach picking up a player that had some problems every now and then. I'd rather not make it the norm, but looks like this kid failed some pot tests a couple times. At least he didn't beat up someone. I can deal with smoking a little pot so long as he realizes he can't do it again during football season.

Always gotta remember... While they are considered adults, they are still kids who can learn from it, or screw up even more.

We got Orakpo from Colorado State after he was dismissed from the team, and he turned out great.

We also had a DT from UH that transferred to Texas State, but ended up being REALLY bad.

If the kid can play, the coaches think it was an isolated incident (or the trouble is past him), and the kid seems genuine... It could be a great get.

I also kinda like "redemption" stories, though (just don't want a team full of redemption stories).

exactly!

We had a former coach that picked up like, 2 or 3 of these kids each year, and none of them ever worked out. Even picked up a backup QB from Ohio State a while back, and he never panned out.

If a coaching staff only does it here and there, then it shows me they are being careful and are being thorough while vetting the kid out.

Randy Moss was dismissed from Florida State, for drugs I believe. Look how he turned out.

Every situation with every kid is different, just gotta trust the coaches that the potential reward outweighs the risk.

Yeah, but look where he wound up after FSU --- Marshall, and they wound up on probation for NCAA violations while Moss was there. I'm not blaming him, that program has a history.

FWIW, I like Moss. Was one of the best receivers ever and has grown up a lot in terms of being a decent human being, or so I read. Damn great athlete.

Having watched AState successfully turn Josh Jarboe from the guy who got kicked out of 2 schools to a model citizen, the reward outweighs the risk from the Georgia Southern perspective.

We've had a few highly regarded transfers that panned out well, but I believe they all left in good terms with their former team.

But, for those that left with issues we've had much worse luck. Demetre Baker, 4 star transfer from UGA, and that CB from Western Mich (can't recall his name) come immediately to mind. Both were dismissed from their former team and were eventually dismissed here. Good luck though. I believe in second chances.

It depends on the coach. Hugh Freeze was an absolute master when he was here of getting the respect of his players. He turned around the careers of multiple players.

I've also seen it backfire if you don't have a coach that can command respect. Much of this is going to come down to how Fritz handles the guy, and the attitude of the kid. Does he understand this is his last chance? etc

This guy made a dumb decision and smoked pot when he should have learned after the first drug test, I don't think that makes him a bad person or unfit to get a second chance away from his current influences. Good pickup by Southern.

Depending on how many tests, he could be one boneheaded mistake away from ncaa suspension

Good maybe no room for error is the motivation he needs. Having a free college education pulled because he smoked pot again would be a decision he would regret for the rest of his life.

If a transfer like this guy is willing to practice for a year knowing he won't see the field and does the required classwork while keeping his nose clean, then good for him and GaSo. I hope he values his second chance.

Word is he said he was in Colorado when he smoked, so all is good.

Was he also 21 at the time or did he break the law as well as NCAA rules? There is no excuse for this kid he just needs to put his past behavior behind him.

RE: Eagles pick up 4 Star LB from FSU
Kids that were let go from their former team because they did not work hard, were not really that talented or smoked a ton of weed generally don't pan out. I would say probably 2/3 of 4 or 5 star recruits who transfer either never start or barely contribute. Oddly enough, the ones who got kicked out for breaking a law have worked out better for us than the ones who broke "team rules".

Most FBS coaches will look the other way repeatedly if a kid is a true talent and can help the team win. Breaking the law and having that become public knowledge is usually the only way to prompt a coach to let the difference makers go. Guys who are let go because of team rules are usually guys that the coaching staff wasn't really interested in keeping around in the first place.

The kid was a dumb ass for smoking pot at FSU. If he had stolen something from a grocery store, trashed the school cafeteria, or raped a drunk coed he'd be good to go. Instead, he smoked pot and paid the price.

To quote Clint Eastwood, "A man's got to know his limitations."

He's three-plus years out of high school. His star rating doesn't matter anymore.
