This.
The whole FBS-operation is going pro.
People who aren't okay with that will have to look at FCS, or maybe even lower divisions than that.

RE: "Increasing" FCoA numbers has begun
Smaller schools are being forced to merged into a larger school as it is right now in many states. We could see some D1 schools being forced together. Imagine that Alabama gets their way, and there will be no more UAB and UAH as the two will become U. Of Alabama of Tus. Middle Georgia State is comprised of 2 campus sharing state funding. Same thing can happen to Alabama. The question would be Texas Longhorns absorbs all the other system schools to make them all 1 larger school? UTEP, Texas-Pan America, Texas-Permian Basin, UTA, UTSA, Texas-Tyler, Texas-Dallas, and so forth. The Texas Longhorn could say they are a campus of more than 150,000 students if that happens.

Surprising no one, #Bama has now doubled its cost of attendance figures to surpass Auburn: http://financialaid.ua.edu/cost/
It was only a matter of time. Here we go.
I know there are a bunch of woman softball, golf, tennis and volleyball et al...., players at Alabama loving their new coa increases. Keep increasing it P-5, and all that $$$$ won't be going to the school at all, but rather to the pro (amateur student) athletes.

Yep. According to a few financial aid officers I have spoken with, if this parallels COA figures used in financial aid budgets and they are inflated, it could be a major audit exception.
Cheers,
Neil

They're the same number. Or at least that's the idea. Proponents wanted a number that wouldn't be fudged just for the sake of football, which is what would happen with unregulated stipends.

My understanding from the financial aid directors that have talked about this, while there is some room for slight fudging, when you are audited on an annual basis by your internal auditors you have to have some kind of documentation on file to justify any increases from last year's budgets to the next year.
Obviously tuition and fee increases are the easiest to document. But the miscellaneous items, which is where it appears the increases may be at some of these schools are harder to document and thus justify.
Again, what these FA directors said in the room is that the federal government is not fooling around with COA costs. They consider it a major piece of their "transparency" initiative as well as their efforts to attempt to curtail student loan increases.
Will be interesting to follow this over the next couple of years.
Cheers,
Neil
