Calling pitches with the number system and catcher sleeve is pretty efficient. I suspect the biggest speed issue is the coach deciding on the pitch which wouldn't be helped by a mic. A clock is what is needed.

Congrats to Virginia. It shows rankings don't mean anything. It is the team that's gets hot at the right time.

Anyway, congrats to the Hoos.

I believe the SEC (at least, I saw the timer at A&M) used clocks this season for time between pitches. Of course, this only applied when there were no runners on base.

RE: CWS - Va. vs. Vb
the view from the stands was the vandy batters stepping out, and the vandy catcher going to the mound multiple times in both game 2 and 3 was at least as much a cause of slow play as uva calling in pitches from the dugout, imho...batters often stepped out after the pitch was called - pretty sure on purpose - which often resulted in another call in...perhaps the view on tv seemed different...no doubt amplified by the 'jay bilas effect' of espn announcers calling for faster play...they were empirically long games, but for at least some of us who were there, it was edge of the seat all night; that vandy lineup was hard to get through, which meant every base runner brought the tying or go ahead runs to the plate...for me, a great CWS watching two absolutely quality programs battle on every single pitch.
