John David Crow passes away
One of the greatest players in SWC history died today. The Aggie was a Heisman winner in 1957 and was one of the top two choices in the draft, along with King Hill.

RIP, John David. Thoughts and prayers for his family and friends.

I still remember that whenever Coach Bryant talked about John David, his tone was almost reverential.

One of my first heroes. Remember going to College Station with dad and uncles Thanksgiving Day '57. Aggies were still shell -shocked from that great 7-6 Owl win 10 days earlier. A mediocre Texas team under rookie coach Darrell Royal came in and beat bear Bryant and Crow in their last game as Aggies, 9-7. I remember innocently asking, "daddy, why isn't John Crow scoring a bunch of touchdowns?" He was not amused.

When we played on the sandlot, we'd all mimic the grimace-like facial nerve tic Crow had. Remember it? BTW, he was never "John David" to us in those days. -- just "Jawhn Crow."

Godspeed, John.

RE: John David Crow passes away
We all knew John David Crow as kids playing football. He and King Hill and others (my memory...) joined the list of greats like Doak Walker and Bobby Layne who were before our time, but celebrated as if they were on the field.

I went to Highland Park Junior High for a short time. They had pictures of alums Doak Walker and Bobby Layne in the halls. I asked Ford Stainback, who also went to Highland Park, if the pictures were still there. He said yes.
