I think I may know someone with an opinion on this.

They have hot to pay for overpriced administrators and bloated debt somehow.

Higher Education is becoming a huge bubble.
When a degree means less and less in terms of finding a job, because there are less jobs to be had, student loans will be the next financial collapse, just like the home mortgage crisis.

Student loans are a racket for the government. 6.8% fixed interest in the current rate environment? BS.

Me too ...and that's the way it should have stayed. The greed of the financial sector trumps the greater good.

Mine was less than 2% too.

The good news is at least in this case, they are treating us equally.

I feel lucky to have been able to work full time during my university years. With that and a couple of scholarships, I was fortunate to graduate with no debt.

I wonder though what the relative UAB tuition compared to median income though was in 89-95 compared to 2015. I would guess it's higher today, all other things being equal.

The provided article gives the increase for ONLY this coming year, but does not reference the increases added annually since 2008 - when the state legislature began cutting the SETF every year by the greatest $$ amount in the 50 states. Keep in mind that the 2015-2016 SETF is substantially smaller than the SETF of 2008-2009. It only looks large compared to the train wreck in the General Fund which has not yet been passed and awaits the special session in August.

Several comments called for more funding from the state for Post Secondary schools, but that could only be accomplished by cutting the SETF share of the K-12 schools unless taxes are raised. It is presently about 70% (K-12)-30% (all PS). As it is now, the SETF's Minimum Program Fund is the sole support of dozens of the state's school districts, one of the main reasons so many of the "failing schools" are in such districts. The new AAA offers these schools no relief from their financial struggles.

Just as the state legislature can never find the courage to pass taxes that ask the top 10% of Alabama's income ladder to pay the same share of their annual income (now 3.5%) as demanded of the bottom 60% (now 10+%), the BOT feels it must always avoid asking the wealthy Athletic Department to part with any of their $150 million annual income for the good of regular students. It is so much more the "Alabama Way" to put university costs on the backs of regular students and their families through raising tuition and other costs annually..

I had seen someone say on FB yesterday that UAB football was never mentioned. Anyone actually go, did it ever come up at all over two days?

Or was it only talked about behind closed doors as usual?

The Tuscaloosa News reporter covering both days of the meetings was asked on Twitter if UAB football had come up. He said it did not.

It is my suspicion that the BOT is biding its time in hopes that the money stream that gave us hope will eventually diminish before any substantial facility improvements are put into place. By having UAB pushed to bring back football before these improvements can be built, they are hoping it will suffer the same records they are used to seeing and they can finish what they started 12/2/14. No matter the team's records, it is imperative that the program have a consistent annual income of about $30-$40 million.

How much original planning does it take to construct meeting rooms, coach's offices and such since they exist at every school with which we must compete? I would think a good contractor can put down a turf field if provided the sufficient funding without months of prep.
