the ant and the aardsma
interesting that the Braves recently signed and brought up former Owl and long-time MLB relief pitcher David Aardsma to help their atrocious bullpen.

Minor Moves: Perry, Aardsma, Reimold

"Two veterans are headed back to the majors today, as the Braves selected the contract of just-signed reliever David Aardsma and the Orioles did the same with outfielder Nolan Reimold. Aardsma came to Atlanta after opting out of his deal with the Dodgers. He has thrown 19 2/3 solid innings at Triple-A, striking out 11.4 and walking 3.2 batters per nine en route to a 2.29 ERA. Reimold, who rejoined the Baltimore organization after departing last year, has slashed .286/.351/.389 over his 194 plate appearances at the highest level of the minors."

Veteran Aardsma joins beleaguered Braves bullpen
6:36 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2015 | Filed in: Braves

Eleven years after making his debut and more than 20 months since he last pitched in the majors, David Aardsma made it back to the big leagues Tuesday when he was brought up from Triple-A to help a beleaguered Braves bullpen.

The 33-year-old right-hander had no delusions of saving the world – or the Braves season.

“Just come out here and do my thing,” Aardsma said. “Do my job, go out there, get my three outs, whatever they ask me to do. Trust myself and let everything else take care of itself.”

[Image: cd05oddlnmnhy2mwmjrlzwqzntjhm2viytq1y2vl...1mgfh1.jpg]

He signed a minor league contract with the Braves on Saturday, after exercising an opt-out clause in his minor league deal with the Dodgers on June 1 and becoming a free agent. Aardsma had pitched well for the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate, posting a 2.41 ERA in 20 appearances, with 23 strikeouts and seven walks in 18 2/3 innings. He and his agent knew there would be interest from other teams.

The Braves, who entered Tuesday with a majors-worst 4.90 bullpen ERA, made their interst in Aardsma known right away last week.

“We had a number of good offers, and the Braves – they wanted me the most,” Aardsma said. “They were very adamant about getting me here, giving me an opportunity. You have to go somewhere where they want you.

Aardsma pitched one perfect inning in his only appearance for Triple-A Gwinnett, which was enough for the Braves. Come on down I-85, son. The Braves optioned right-hander Cody Martin back to Triple-A to open a spot.

“He only had one inning in Triple-A, but he’s a guy with pretty good numbers in the minor leagues,” said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez, who really didn’t need to explain, given the circumstances of his current bullpen. “And he’s got some major league experience. He hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since, I think, 2013. But here’s a guy who, put him in the right situation and I think he can help us.”

Aardsma has a 4.23 ERA in 298 career appearances over eight major league seasons. He last pitched in the majors in 2013 with the Mets, posting a 4.31 ERA in 43 appearances, with 36 strikeouts and 19 walks in 39 2/3 innings.

“Good guy, knows what he’s doing,” said Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski, a teammate of Aardsma’s with the White Sox in 2006-2007. “He’s got experience, he’s been in some high-level situations, and he’ll help. He has a little breaking ball, he throws a cutter, he’s able to mix it up, and he competes. That’s his biggest positive is that he competes and he goes after guys.”

Thank you, Almadenmike. I did change it.

Question about the "code" tag: why does the addition of the tag "code" and "/code" line this up? Does it recognize the tabbing/ spacing in the original and preserve it exactly or is the more going on? Also I noticed I could not add the [b] bold tags within the code portion (I originally had bolded the headings to make them stand out from the numbers.) I'm no graphics or html wiz but I've tried to learn some of the basic tags and codings to add some variety to the generic font.

Again, thank you for pointing out how to do this, Almaden!

Question RE: the ant and the aardsma
Strasberg pitched five shutout innings in his return from the disabled list, Anthony Rendon tied his career-high with four hits and the Washington Nationals defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Good night for Rendon.

(let's try the "code" tag again here- grabbing it from the box score on Yahoo and deleting Span's line (as well as the names as they don't line up)

Rendon's line last night:
Code:
AB     R     H     RBI     HR     BB     K     SB     LOB     AVG
4     0     4     1     0     0     0     0     0     .277

hmm, not exact, but better than without the code tags. tried it a few different ways in preview, this was the best I could get it.

You're very welcome, Good Owl. I believe the "code" does adjust for tabs, but I don't know how it does it (and I also don't know how to see the positions/settings of the imbedded tabs). So I just remove them and use the space bar to even things out. Yes, it can be tedious, shuttling back and forth between the preview and edit screens, but I like reading properly aligned tables. :-)

And yes, bold, italic, underline and other useful text features are not recognized by the "code" tag. I wish they were!

Question RE: the ant and the aardsma
ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Braves have recalled right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon and catcher Christian Bethancourt from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Right-hander David Aardsma has been designated for assignment.

The 33-year-old Aardsma, who was signed by Atlanta on June 6, was 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in 33 games.

Aardsma joined the Braves bullpen in June after not pitching in the majors since 2013.

Oh, well. Fun while it lasted.

RE: the ant and the aardsma
weird, but in the pic I posted, Aardsma looks a lot like former Braves reliever John Rocker:

Yes, Aardsma started well with a couple of good outings for the Braves, but since then he has been the reason their bullpen has been atrocious. The gopher got him (1 HR every 5 innings pitched).

RE: the ant and the aardsma
That might be a bit harsh. The Braves bullpen was bad before he come on, he did okay for a while, and the Braves are in the middle of being bad like the Cubs and Astros were for a couple of years. I would guess that BJ Upton, Dan Uggla and Frank Wren have a lot more to do with why the Braves bullpen is so bad than David Aardsma.

I appreciate Aardsma being on the team--it was fun to cheer on a mlb Rice guy, and hope David can continue his career elsewhere, perhaps get an opportunity to catch on with a playoff contender, which is the possible silver lining of the Braves releasing him this week rather than next.
