Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and reps recently introduced the American Innovation act aimed at significantly increasing federal funding for research universities, specially those in Illinois.

I just read the Bill where exactly is it aiming "Specifically at NIU or other schools in Illinois"

I never said specifically at NIU or other schools in Illinois. The goal is for funding of agencies and research univs that deal with the programs i mentioned. For example. sustained funding for members of the URA (which UB and NIU is part of) that does research/innovations for energy, etc.

The point that im trying to make to the troll, is that ISU doesn't sit amongst the Science Coalition schools in Illinois which receive large sums of federal/state funding for research programs and implementation. Bringing up ISU as a target for the "increase in funding" he speaks of, is ignorance of higher education in the Illinois, on his part.

This little troll is tenacious, if nothing else...

Dude, get it through your head. ISU is FCS and likes it that way. You will never have a presentable football team and that's ok, but stop pretending otherwise and stop trying to discredit real FBS teams.

He's the same ISU troll, under a different name that was crap talking NIU and the MAC in the "what should the mac do" thread in the MAC forum. He keeps resurfacing.

But, yes there is a lilttle bit of a Illinois spin on the Act because of the national research labs located in Illinois. The Fermilab and Argonne labs (where UB energy, physics, engineers researchers also go) are down the road from NIU. In keeping these well funded, it ensures our schools have sustained federal/state support.

There is definitely a gap between the flagship school at Illinois' main campus and every other state school ... with Illinois missing the level of school of MSU in Michigan, Purdue in Indiana, Miami University in Ohio, and etc.

IUC is the most plausible institution to build up to fill that gap, since its a step better academically than NIU, Illinois State and Southern Illinois but, (1) as already discussed, there's no money for that in Illinois and (2) even if there were, there's no reason to expect any connection between one of UIC, Illinois State or Southern Illinois being picked to be built up to the "#2 academic state school" level, and a transition to FBS, and NIU is already in the MAC, so none of that is relevant in any way whatsoever to MAC expansion.

So you have searched and found some low level "coalition" and that's the back bone that bozo Durbin wants to turn NIU into the next Michigan St?? Seriously??

Do more research and with more detail. State Farm is also a member of that coalition, they are MUCH more connected with Illinois St, putting large resources into the business school.. NIU is a low level research school that has declining academics and enrollment..

And despite ISU still being a FCS school, they still have a better overall athletic program than NIU

From outside of Illinois, this sounds like petty sniping that signifies nothing.

But they are an FCS school, and do not exhibit any desire to transition to FBS, so that claim is beside the point for MAC expansion.

Have nothing against NIU, have just grown tired of NIU fans talking down on ISU, comments such as "I Screwed Up' being a good example, when ISU is a better school both academically and athletically..

Let me caveat this, w/ "more detail" as NeatT puts it. NIU was one of a 16 (tOSU, UMich, Buffalo, UGA, etc.) schools that was give a 68.5million dollar grant for research and implementation of broadband connectivity for commerce and commercial use in the region. Since being given this grant in 2010, and result of years of research, these NIU-managed programs have attracted over $120million in federal and state funding and large partnerships with the business sector in a commerce rich region of the US. This is only one example.

State Farm, okay what university in Illinois doesn't have a partnership with them? UofI basketball arena is called "State Farm Center", renovations and naming bough by state farm. What is your point?

Low level? R/HU isn't "low level". A DRU that ISU is, is in fact "low level".

Have a great day NealT!

Same with Ohio as well. If the state wants to keep the kids in state? They need a second school like Ohio State to be there. I noticed several schools listed as very high or high research in FBS, FCS and D2 that could fit the bill. Would Ohio State like a peer school in the state of Ohio? Could Ohio U. be the answer?

I mean, he keeps saying "my son blah blah blah ISU student blah blah blah"

It's fairly obvious he's an ISU student trying hype his school up as something better than it actually is

Ohio St. doesn't want a true peer.

But on the undergraduate level, Miami has at times been viewed as a better school. Its still an exceptional school. USNWR rates them 76 and Ohio St. 54.

They already have Cincinnati. Far closer to "the answer" than anyone else.
