If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Rice the big football team in Houston back then? That was way before the Oilers and UT / A&M weren't as big then as they are now, so I guess it would make sense. That would explain why you guys chose to build a gigantic stadium for such a small school.
Rice was Houston's defacto pro team in those days during the postwar boom which were also the golden years of Rice FB.
They won the SWC 4 times during that decade from the mid 40s to late 50s capped off by the 1954 Cotton Bowl vs Alabama which featured the odd play of a Rice RB breaking free toward the endzone only to be tackled by a Tide player from off the sidelines which resulted in Rice being awarded a TD. Rice went on to win that game 28-6.

...and many independents.
What if the independents of the 80's had created a "conference" where they merely packaged their tv rights together and played each other in football (not necessarily a full conference "slate") but didn't treat it like an actual conference, unless they decided to later become one in all other non-football sports?
Say it was:
Florida State
Miami
Pittsburgh
Penn State
Notre Dame
South Carolina
Syracuse
Virginia Tech
West Virginia
Georgia Tech
ND likely would not have done it. They liked, and still like, their stand alone, over the air, NBC deal.
It might have worked with everyone else, though.

When did the NBC deal start?
It's a less restrictive/inclusive version of your current ACC membership. Though I could see all you uppity Domers taking your tv money ball and going home if this were proposed in the 80s.
EDIT: I actually think it's a fairly crappy basketball league.

1991.
Yes, I think the "uppity" Domers would have done what they perceived was in their best interests instead of something less that others would have wanted them to do.

$EC and my tradition bound Aggies; cement the state of Texas with a travel partner worthy of your AAU membership. Everyone states TAMU already owns Houston, but so does Tennessee own Nashville. Rice got dealt a bad hand when The SWC imploded but is doing things smart to get invited back to the big kids table. SEC has raised their academic bar and many Owls are tiring of singing the Whorns praises while Texas singlehandedly destroys their conference for their own benefit. A second academic private school for the SEC corrects earlier errors that drove Tulane and public ivy Gt from their ranks. Plus Houston then becomes a site that SEC alums can travel to and see their team while waiting to get on the priority list for season tickets at Baton Rouge, Gainsville or 'you fill in the blank.'
