football yes. Basketball- I just don't think so. P5 isn't destroying the basketball tournament, and as schools like Gonzaga, Memphis, Butler, etc. have shown- you can compete in basketball being outsiders. And that's not going to change.

Wait until the P5 monetize basketball and destroy it. That's their next target. The current basketball setup doesn't give them the absolute top dollar, so they're going to manipulate everything in order to change it.

There are good basketball conferences that could be devastated IF the P5 decide not to cut them in.

I honestly don't mind the P5 keeping their ranks "private" and making a lot of money that they don't have to share. That's called capitalism. I just don't like it when they blow up systems that have been in place for a long time to fit their agenda.

It may not be short term - but I believe long term the schizm will absolutely destroy basketball. When the $50M/school contracts become stagnant, the NCAA tourney will be next money making oppurtunity. And if we have learned anything in the last 10-15 years, the $ is king when it comes to college athletics.

Also what do Gonzaga, Memphis, and Butler all have in common? No championships. The divide is already real. If you take UConn out of the mix it's been 25 years since a non P5 school won a NCAA basketball championship. That's a scary thought for the non P5 schools if this day ever comes.

I think the Powers That Be...will realign the tourney. Hopefully they let the Top 12-15 conference participate.

TBH...I think having the Top 15 or so conferences involved is about right

I could live with that...Stever.

Maybe build in a clause the NCAA could invite an overachieving team from the bottom 14 to get invited (thinking Harvard). The Bottom 14 could have their own tourney in Dallas, Dayton, Chicago, KC, Orlando or NOLA.

No question, the P5 would LOVE to take the same control over the NCAA Tournament as they have over college football. The main reason "football drives the bus" in realignment is that $700 million in basketball value is locked away in the NCAA coffers via the tournament. If it wasn't, basketball's value to a conference would go up significantly.

But, IMO that is unlikely to happen, simply because the great mass of college basketball fans - even at P5 schools - prefer the tournament exactly the way it is, with full participation by all Division I conferences.

You have any facts?
Check out the Bill Smith collection in the West Virginia Archives at the Science and Cultural Center in Charleston, WV. It covers 1957-1993.
Sorry...I'd rather believe an AD who was actually involved with the vote.
I'd rather believe my father, who was totally impartial on the matter, since he grew up in Ohio, and covering WVU athletics was just a job. He was good at it too, considering he was named sportswriter of the year in 1977. I forget which organization gave him the award now (BBWA perhaps). He had stories about eastern football before anyone else, including the writers in NYC, because he knew how to build relationships and kept his word about what was on and off the record.

ADs are biased and have selective memory. I watched my father interview enough of them, and saw him catch them in a number of inconsistencies over the years. They gloss over the truth, especially if it hides their incompetence or makes them look really good.

I know what happened, as well as what happened behind the scenes, which has never been publicly discussed. It nearly came to blows among the participants on more than one occasion.

Choose your poison, dude. It makes no difference to me.

Not a chance this artificial cut off would fly. NONE

You are cutting entire states, with their flagships schools out.

uch of the Senate went to schools or represent schools you are trying to eliminate, while keeping a ****** basketball conference like the Sun Belt.

NJIT respectfully disagrees with you.
