That's not so... Which is why stephen king loathed that movie.
The HOTEL was the main character. That was his problem with Kubricks interpretation!!!

not the MAIN character... but the hotel was the main influence upon all the characters
it was the real antagonist...

My take from the movie WAS that the hotel was evil. Now, I wouldn't know as well as King about each character and what was in his mind, but for someone reading the book, the dialogue and the movie scenes were the same. I'll never forget redrum...

I didn't mean that to come off short by the way. I apologize if it did...

I'm actually re-reading it now and there are things in there that are just so many things that are different. There was no hedge maze, but rather hedge animals that moved and actually attacked Hollerann. The Hotel also had motive and that's something that didn't translate at all to me into the movie. It didn't give any background into room 217 or the lady that was in the tub. And in the book the hotel totally comes to life--elevator running by itself, party favors from the masquerade ball coming out of nowhere. It is so much creepier to me than the movie. As an aside, a friend told me that there was a tv miniseries that came out maybe ten years ago that was more true to the book that the kubrick thing was.

All that said, I thought Misery movie was a lot closer to the original work than the shining. But it's been a minute since I read it.

I say all that to say, 46... I'm your number one fan...

That is the one problem with movies, in a two hour span they never have the time to give much background to the characters or other important information, they just dive right into it.

Misery was also a great adaptation.

I just picked up Shutter Island at Half Priced Books, of course I've already seen the movie so those characters are going to have faces for me.

THAT is a very interesting point.
Jack of course looked like Nicholson in my mind while reading it.
The interesting part was that Wendy was not exactly like Shelly Duvall while I was reading it... (King mentions that she had blonde hair and was very attractive to all who saw her--to the point of men stopping and turning to stare. Talk about dropping the ball casting wendy in the movie. bleck.)
Danny and Mr Hollarann in my mind looked nothing like they did in the movie which surprised me. I went in preusming that they'd look like the creepy 70s haircut danny and Scatman Crothers, respectively.

That said, I also re-read Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemtion last year and Morgan Freeman narrated it in my mind. So there you have it. An interesting phenomenon, that...
