we don't need more hippies

no wonder you hate 38104...it's hipster heaven

Hippies, I said. Not hipsters.

Both are equally annoying. Attention whores basically with no sense about them yet. But most grow out of it.

No I hate 38104 because of all the crime Shelby County, as a whole, has a crime issue...but 38104 is certainly safer than Orange Mound, Whitehaven, Hickory Hill, West Memphis, etc and because of the horribly arrogant attitude those that live there have about it. What's wrong with loving where you live? It's kind of a sh*thole to me, personally--I realize some find that old smelly nasty house thing quaint, but to each her own. It's flyover country to me though so I don't really worry about it. But I keep my sidearm within grabbing distance whenver I have to be at a stoplight out that way... in theory, you should do that in most urban areas

I really like 38103 and 38104...I grew up in 38138, It's nice enough, good schools, nice folks.

You've defaced a masterpiece.
Do you also draw a mustache on the mona lisa? (To make her look more like a hipster?)

meh..... Mona would look pretty good with a pornstache.

Highlighted ULI panel recommendations:

Creation of Greater Memphis Recreation and Sports Complex, which will include public park, water park, trails and "a very specific indoor sports facility," according to panelist Nathan Watson.

Repurposing a part or shell of the Mid-South Coliseum as a smaller stage for concerts, graduations and sporting events.

Creation of a 10-acre site for a privately developed commercial water park similar to Six Flags, according to panelist Stephen Whitehouse. The 37-acre public park has potential to include wave and surf pond to create a beach environment in the heart of Memphis, according to panelist Michael Medick.

Tiger Lane will be extended to Central Avenue as part of Memphis Fairgrounds plan.

Fairgrounds redevelopment and Crosstown Concourse are essential for 38104.

RE: Fairgrounds Redevelopment
Come on in town, MemphisTiger15, and check out the Kroc Center, Cooper-Young these days, the planned development for Cooper and Central, and the residential areas to the east of the Liberty Bowl.

You are entirely myopic if all you see is Orange Mound. Money-making does not have to be the whole purpose of the Fairgrounds, either. The redevelopment should serve all areas. A rising tide lifts all boats.

I really like the idea of extending Tiger Lane from the North end zone gate to Central Ave...the water park? Not so much (Kroc center has several pools)...Put a Target where Liberty Land used to be.

Here is the problem with that idea. I state this from experience because I was and still am involved with the marketing and advertising for many water parks including Six Flags owned parks in Dallas, Houston, Denver, Louisville, San Antonio, Atlanta and other areas. We handled the outer market ad campaigns for 14 Six Flags parks one year. if there is the slightest chance that a gang or disruptive element will attend a park, then chaos and lost revenues will ensue. One riot, gang fight, etc, can ruin a water park and families and Women 25-49 with kids....the core target audience...will not go to the park for fear of harm to their kids. I live in Dallas and on the news here, we see gangs of Memphis kids attacking innocent shoppers at stores....for no apparent reason. Until that gets resolved....opening a water park is a very risky venture. Do it and plan on having police everywhere at the park and I am not even sure that will help with the attitude of government in many areas towards police. I would scrap that idea until things change.

Yeah, hipsters spend time making themselves look dirty.

Kroc Center:

There is plenty of land in Midtown that has already been cleared, acres and acres, just south of Poplar and west of Cleveland that Kroger has just bought that could be used for big box retail. The Fairgrounds area has bigger and better uses for its surrounding communities.

It costs money to use the pools at the Kroc Center and also at the Children's Museum. The privately-owned water park suggested by the Urban Land Institute would far surpass either one, plus there would be other public splash park areas.

You have bought into the Memphis hatorade propaganda, promulgated mostly by those who live outside of Memphis or live in the burbs and never venture into Midtown or Downtown. The infamous Kroger Fam mob incident, while horrible, and while an indication of middle class youths who need much more guidance and discipline and places to do something constructive, was a one-time, isolated deal. I have shopped at that Kroger for 35 years, and there is no fear from those who continue to shop there.

The East Memphis moms who bring their children in to the Children's Museum seem to do so without fear, as do all the Midtowners of all races who use the Kroc Center. The Kroc Center has been wildly successful.

This unique area, which includes a bit of East Memphis, including Chickasaw Gardens, Central Gardens, Cooper-Young, Orange Mound, and the University of Memphis area on down Central, is in a renaissance and moving in the right direction. I think a water park, private or public, would be well-controlled and have enough security guards, as does the Children's Museum and the Kroc Center.

I am far from naive, but if you could only see all the great things that are happening in this town right now, and the new urban attitude, I think you would be amazed.
