I guess where I live is "suburban-ish", though technically it is in the city limits, the neighborhood certainly isn't urban. More like the Wonder Years with wide streets and sidewalks and a lot of small parks. I have no interest in moving "further out", however. If, I'm gonna live in the sticks, I'm going to have land, not busy body neighbors and HOAs.

If I ever move to "suburbs," it'll be suburbs like you're describing.

I'll never live in a land of sub-divisions and cul-de-sacs.

I get why some people like it, it is just not for me.

I love being able to walk to the park, walk to work (if I feel like it), or bike around. I still use my car for most things, but it is nice to have the option without being 100% reliant on my car to get around. Never sitting in traffic to go anywhere is pretty nice too.

Also agree that if i move out of the city, it'll be to live in the middle of nowhere with a big plot of land. To me, the suburbs represent all the negatives of city life (traffic, lack of space, pollution, etc) without the positives (walkability, lack of traffic nearby amenities, events, etc). That simply doesn't interest me. I have friends on Facebook that make nearly daily Facebook posts about how much they hate sitting in traffic, and at 3 hours a day for some of them, rightfully so, but that is a consequence of their decision to live where they did, so I don't feel too bad for them.

Sounds like they bought a house at a stupid location. My commute is a breeze and I live in Cabarrus County.

Well it certainly isn't urban, city living. Just google earthed it and a good chunk of the houses even have pools. But no, it isn't new-suburban either.

So much of your personal anger in this post.

As somebody who grew up in the suburbs and had parents who commuted 30-40min to the city everyday, I'm not so much against suburbs but long commutes to work. I refuse to spend 1-1.5 hours a day in my car. Currently, I work in the suburbs but live in the city. I love not having to drive my car on the weekends.

RE: The Suburbs
The idea of living in the suburbs as a better place is becoming outdated. Now people like the idea of living in dense, walkable neighborhoods without needing a car and all the amenities of the big city in walking, bussing or train distance.

As has been said though, it depends on where you are in your life and your priorities. When I get all my ducks in a row, I'm definitely moving to the city, having no kids and wanting to reduce expenses. As for bad public schools, that's what private schools are for.

I told my wife I would be perfectly happy to live somewhere that I would feel compelled to get on Facebook and make a status when a car drives by the house.

now, we're talking!

I want to be able to own enough land that going to my closest "neighbor" house will involve using something motorized. People can have the hustle and bustle of the city, the concrete, the crime, the poverty, and the mass transit crap.

Driving a few miles into town to go grocery shopping sounds wonderful especially if that town has about 10,000 people or less.

That was a choice your parents made and you choice to do a reverse commute. The issue mptnstr@44 and the OP are referring to is the idea that someone is bad, or selfish because they choose to live in the 'burbs and that it is an incorrect choice. Just take a look at the land use and zoning laws in Oregon to see the coercive step that are taken to limit ones options.

I love the burbs. I pay good money to live around people who generally keep to themselves.

Yeah, I briefly browsed that but it reads like a bunch of people with their heads in the sand unwilling to address some of the issues that urban areas face.

My wife and I intentially avoid any area with mass transit whether it's buses, rail, whatever... Our basic theory is that all you're doing is giving the riff raff who can't afford a car an easier path to live where you'd rather they not live or visit.

Suburbs are great. Weird people live in the city or country.

I've lived all my life in suburban NYC, Chicago, and Dallas.

South Charlotte and Lake Norman have terrible commutes. I wouldn't call those stupid locations unless judging solely by commute.
