RE: MLB draft
Got it. For the record, no I don't bother with "scouting services" for this very reason. He didn't pitch at all this year...period. I hope he can pitch and pitch well, but I clearly don't get as excited as you do about what our guys do in Santa Barbara or Alaska or the Cape. I hold to my statement about Fox and your post was about the weekend rotation. The names you mentioned pitched from the bullpen this year. That's why I stated they have potential.

I think Otto and Orewiler were our best pitchers last year. I fully agree about Fox. There is a tendency on this board that, when a formerly good pitcher is having a bad year, then has one or maybe two outings, they think that he has returned to form, only to be disappointed with a string of poor outings again. I am not sold that Fox returned to the previous year's form. Even if he did do so, he was able to lose a whole year's form over the off season, so I am not confident he will not lose three or four games worth of performance over this off season. Would have rather seen Orewiler return. I think his loss is massive. I was hoping he would do like fast Eddie did. I think he would have enjoyed the same success as Fast Eddie.

Blake didn't just have one or two good outings to end the season. Rather, since the UTSA series in late April, he was back to his old self. His last 5 - 6 outings (one-third of the season) were strong.

I was wondering this as well. If so, I am a little surprised a team with some financial flexibility in the draft didn't take him in a late round and see how he looked this summer.

He's scheduled to pitch in the Cape, but I don't believe he's reported or seen action yet. He probably wasn't drafted because he made it very clear to the scouting community they he was committed to returning to Rice next year. Again, this is what his parents have been telling us since late April. He loves Rice, and is enjoying college life...at least for one more year.

So ..... he is not only a gifted pitcher, but he is wise as well.

Jim Callis tweeted that Wakamatsu signed with the Indians for $290,000. Bummer for Rice.

Can someone confirm ... last night on TV, seated at the Braves table, was the scout who has been haunting The Reck for many years now ??
Ralph Garr

He's a great fellow; he was in my Sunday School class that I led for several years along with a former Rockets player.
He has been scouting Rice for the Braves for many years now!!

Unfortunately, but from what I've heard from the inside, not unexpected. Having said that, Wakamatsu was really struggling this Summer in the California League (unlike Proctor). Still, a big loss.
