Should UT Retire More Basketball Jerseys ?
Toledo has been playing basketball for 100 years, but has retired ONE men's basketball jersey, Steve Mix.

As someone who has been to dozens of college and pro arenas, I can say that having numerous retired jerseys hanging from the rafters is the norm.

I think it's time to honor some other players who made their mark as Rockets.

Consider:

Tom Kozelko Only MAC 2X Player of the Year in UT history. 3X All-MAC. Owns the highest single season scoring average in Toledo history by a junior, 24.3 points per game. One of three UT players that averaged over 20ppg for his career. Averaged 10.4 rpg for his career. Chosen as an alternate for the 1972 Munich Olympics. Played three seasons in the NBA.

The next two players were on teams before Toledo joined the MAC. It seems like these players are generally forgotten, but they are two of three All-Americans in UT history, the other being Mix.

Chuck Chuckovits Set the UT scoring record at that time. Set a national scoring record of 41 points in one game. As a junior, he led Toledo to a national ranking as the nation's #7 team. The Rockets' first All-American. Won MVP honors in the National Basketball League, and averaged 24.3 ppg for his career.

Bob Gerber Toledo's only two-time All-American. Set the national collegiate season scoring record, and broke the Madison Square Garden scoring record for a college player. His UT teams won 35 straight home games. His senior season, he was voted the best basketball player in the United States by many national publications.

RE: Should UT Retire More Basketball Jerseys ?
I would start by asking the question- what is the current selection criteria and what do you think it should be? If you have the right criteria established then the number of players honored becomes less subjective. You don't want to be unreasonably strict but you don't want to go crazy with it either just to get some jerseys in the rafters for appearance. It needs to have meaning.

Also, this is a minor note, but I would draw a distinction between having your jersey hung in the rafters and having your number retired. There are only 36 numbers available, I would suggest not retiring any of them.

I wasn't aware.

Retiring a jersey would be a rare thing but I hadn't expected it to be this rare.

I guess it would depend on what retired would mean. At Michigan it means a player wears it to represent the player and honor him and motivate the current player. At other schools retired jerseys are worn by current players when that player wants that particular number. Ifretiring a jersy in this instance means you honor the player by allowing no one to wear it then I like the idea. otherwise it really doesn't mean as much.

My basic point was we've been playing basketball for 100 years and we've honored ONE player with a retired jersey. Even if it were 6 or 7 that would only work out to maybe one player every 15 years or so, certainly not going overboard. We've got guys who were All-Americans and considered among the top 10 players in the nation who deserve the honor.

You don't actually have to retire the number if you don't want to, just put up a banner with a name and number and keep using it. Although, it's not like you're going to run out of numbers.

I'm not a fan of retiring ANY jerseys. Not for any sport at any level of competition.

This is where I fall in. Having a ring/wall of honor or something to remember the best that ever played is fine, but people get way too hung up on a number on a piece of cloth.

As I understand it retiring a jersey is putting up a banner or a replica jersey with the person's name and number on it to honor them. The number can still be worn by other players. When a sports team retires a number no other player can wear the number and is not done very often.

Mix is about the only one that I can think of that is worthy. Without a lengthy NBA career the answer would be no.

Should the criteria be only the player's college career?

Two women have their jerseys retired and they never played in the WNBA. They were never All-Americans. Don't shoot me, OK?

You could argue that Larry Jones had a better pro career than Mix.

Also Haris Charalambous's (collapsed while running) name is hanging in Savage (not sure about his number).

You could retire the number 20 from having many great players wear it while at Toledo. Commemorating all of the greats... Not just one.
